I just picked a 1996 bare bones Camaro v6 manual and I have plans to drop my forged lq9 in it with a built th400 and forward facing truck manifolds. I plan on going straight to motor plates and a stabilizer. Would there be problems with keeping the 6 cylinder k member and steering rack?

I don't think the V6 steering rack will clear, I'm pretty sure it comes straight up just like the LT1 rack.

Ok so I have an LS1 k member that I got for $60 from a local LS1tech member. He threw in control arms, perches, and mounts. My question is now that I have the 6 cylinder completely dropped, can I switch the shock towers, perches, and control arms from the 96 v6 over to the ls1 k member? They are actually in better shape than the LS1 versions. I just don't know if they will fit yet or if they will mess up the geometry of the suspension. I looked around the thread and didn't see any mention of ls1 so I'm thinking I can but want to make sure.

I will most likely be getting a converted manual LS1 rack from Rack Doctor.

Also, my LQ9 came with an uncut DBW engine harness(unbelievable from junk yard!), should I still source a LS1 harness? I plan out switching the throttle body to a DBC body during my build.

Thanks for all the help guys. My build thread will be coming soon hopefully!

I have a New in the Box with paperwork LS1 rack from the Rack DR. that I am going to sell. I just haven't taken pictures of it to post in the for sale section yet. PM me if you're interested in saving some money on one.

Your front suspension parts will all swap over to the LS1 k-member just fine. Keep your eye out for a steering shaft from a 98-02 if you don't already have one.

Add another LT1 - to - LS1 conversion kick off... This article is awesome with the sticky's BTW! It has pretty much answered all my questions and I'm very appreciative to all those that have contributed.

Welcome to the dark side, now you'll have the best of both worlds, LT looks with LS performance.

Yeah its been a pretty easy swap so far. It's the gathering of the parts that's taking the longest. $60 here, $35 there...waiting for people to answer your WTB ad lol The actual work involved hasn't been too bad at all.

It's amazing how a large number of people in the LTX section appear to believe that the swap is expensive, difficult, and not worth it for 25 RWHP tops, but everyone who actually does it has no issues other than trying to find certain things (Fbody accessories and steering rack...).

I've just about decided that I'm just going to wait a few years and go about this a different way. LSX -->LTX front end swap.
The way I figure it...I may be able to find an LS1 car in pretty good shape compared to a lot of LT1 cars (no offense to anyone with nice LT1's) and swapping the front clip should actually net me a few dollars since LS1 clips bring more money.

If I had to do it over again, this is how I'd do it (and I'd sell off the high dollar LS1 and buy a LQ9/4).

Haha, for sure. I hate wiring, so I just had him do it. Even though he would've walked me through it no problem.

Hey guys I'm sure its been answered maybe I'm not looking in the right place (tried search) but I was wondering if anyone had pictures of what exactly the difference is between the 93-97 and 98-02 steering gears? I was looking on hawks and other parts distributors and I can't seem to find that they are different part numbers...is the intermediate shaft thats different? Just curious bc I'm going to start a swap soon. Thanks guys in advance.

The rack input shaft is at approximately a 45* angle coming out of the rack vs just about straight up on an LT rack. So if you tried to use an LT rack on an LS conversion you would put the rack input shaft through the bottom of the oil pan. Also, the LS steering shaft uses a U-joint vs a rag joint.
