Removing Waterpump pulley
Removing Waterpump pulley Hey guys,
I'm in the midst of putting an LY6 into my 69 GTO. Like most, the pulley on the waterpump is hitting the steering box, so I'm in need of a smaller pulley.
I've searched around and everyone said that it'll just come off with a puller and not to worry about what looks like a nut w/ a 3/8 hex at the end of the shaft.
I put a puller on and started cranking away... thusfar all I've done is ruin the pulley by bending it where the 3 arms hit.
what am I doing wrong here?

i think you mean the power steering pump pulley is hitting the steering box, that engine must be set real low if the waterpump is interfering with the steering box

you're absolutely right... i'm a little slow tonight workin on the blower motor and a short in my truck...
i'm using camaro short frame stands and dirtydingo solid mounts... i hope it's not set too low because the T56 is sitting a good ways up into my floor pan, even with the cut.
It barely scrapes it, but enough where I need a smaller pulley...
thanks for the advice on the tool... anyone know if autozone or advanced has them? that way i can essentially rent it.

Yes both places will have them for rentals. They work really well too. Some of the replacement pulleys need to be pressed further onto the shaft than just flush with the end, in order to do this you need to use washers or something, those kits also make it almost impossible to pull those pulleys back off. There are other puller tools but not usually so cheap, nor easy to use and only work as pullers.
