Mating a SBC/BBC Trans (T10, Muncie, Richmond, TKO) with an LS motor
#261
The spacer arrived yesterday (RM-198) but the lower holes don't match up with the 6036 bellhousing. I'll call Quick Time tomorrow but will be returning it.
Anyone have the measurement from the transmission face to the splined end facing the pilot bearing. Using the large pilot bearing I may be a bit too close with the shortened Quick Time.

Well, using my alignment tool which is an old input shaft, when I bottom it out on the large pilot bearing face, I only get 5 1/4"to the bellhousing face.
The shorter QT bellhousing looks like it needs the small pilot bearing.

It's been a few years since I rebuilt a Muncie, but not sure what mark on the input shaft would indicate the face of the trans.
But mock it up, see what you need. Btw, don't have the Muncie yet?

No, not yet. That's the next major purchase. Just stabbed the LM7 in and working my way to the rear.
I found some information that leads me to think that measurement is 6 5/8 from face of tranny to tip of input shaft. I'm about 3/8" shy of achieving that even with my 'tool' bottomed on the pilot bearing.

Im looking at putting a muncie with my 5.3. I plan to go the route of the Sachs 1050 pressure plate. Is there a reason in particular that I couldnt just use the 10 spline clutch kit from a 2005 silverado that would match the pressure plate? The specs im finding are 10 spline X 1-1/8 on both kits?

You can try, but the truck clutch is about 3/4" larger than the old school 11" clutch. I'm not sure if it will fit in a 621 bellhousing.

Ive got a friend down at the local parts house that would let me mockup as long as its not scarred up. My thinking is if the old 454 clutch will fit on the bolt pattern of the 1050 plate why wouldnt the truck clutch. Probably wont work seems too simple...

It's definitely worth trying. Let us know if it works. Are you using a 621 bellhousing?

Hey guys, a lot of GREAT info has been compiled here and I'd like to make a summary for a "Sticky" at the top of the Forum...anyone willing to cut & paste what combo's are "proven" to work with and without the use of a hydraulic's to save people time and trouble searching?
#275
Pretty much everything I can confirm is in post #1, it includes part numbers. Yes, I've actually done and run a Richmond, T10, and Muncie, both 10 and 26 spline.
There are some posts on T5s here from others, but cant confirm they worked.
Post #2 has hydraulic throwout bearing.
Post #6 has Z bar mounting info.

Covered that in post #1, that's what I used on the 26 spline Richmond:
From post #1....I know....lots of info and details there.
"Flywheel/clutch: For 26 spline, I've used the LS1 flywheel/clutch. Info here indicates you're best off to buy matching flywheel/clutch combos. One note, the flywheel will be about 0.4" farther from the trans. This means the front of the disks internal splines will run off the splines on the input shaft. I've not heard of anyone having problems with this. It also means you'll need a longer throwout bearing (PT614037) compared to the BBC setup."

Sounds good. A 26 spline Richmond, T10, or Muncie with a 621 bellhousing are all the same and have a different input shaft length tan a T56 and require the use of the outer crank flange, LS7 pilot bushing. Similar to the 10 spline trans.

Gary, as said many times, awesome work! Everyone else that is here too!
Here is something I just found, and am waiting on the manufacture to give some more details. As some of us already know, the early Chevy II required special items for the clutch. As I have looked at all of the conversion pieces, I realized that it was overly expensive and might add to the complexity. Seems some kits exist where you can use a 153t flywheel and clutch.
I didn't want to modify everything just to have an LS. Like a hydraulic clutch system, flywheel, clutch, plate and $600 Lakewood bell housing, which would likely be about 2k. Or go the other route of a 621 and have to figure out how to avoid the frame, headers or geometry issues. (I wish a modified 621 existed)
Basically, I was about to just update my SBC to an Edelbrock EFI or just leave the carb on it. Hoping this kits pans out and makes my specific swap more feasible.
