How has that wrinkle finish held up? Did you prime the parts prior to paint?

Thanks SLOW SEDAN! Was yours the G8 with the LSX?
You probably needed to start turning your rear shocks back up a bit. The softest setting isn't always the best for drag racing...just like the hardest setting isn't always the best for road racing. There is a happy medium.

After about six thousand miles, they still look like the day I painted them. I painted my 4 cylinder covers the same way and they still looked good after about 10 years.

It's all about the preparation. Clean them really good with a brush and some dish soap to get all the oil off first. Dry and warm them up in the oven for a bit. Make sure you coat them really well with just one coat of the wrinkle paint. Then stick them back in the oven at about 150° for an hour or so.

Oh yea, make sure you open the windows.

I plan to get some drag radials and try again in the spring. I'm hoping to break into the high 10's with some extra grip.

So, no primer?

Tipsy

EDIT: VHT has a video on Youtube. In the comments, it's mentioned that primer should be used on bare aluminum. The video also indicates multiple coats are necessary for proper results.

I've done a few this way and always had great results. No primer and just 1 coat. A second coat takes away some of the wrinkle from the finish, IMO. But then again, multiple coats uses more of their product.

I've also added long tubes, deleted the cats, did an X pipe and straight through mufflers since then. Might even pick up a few mph.

Can't wait till spring!

However will you manage to do that?

Nice build, man. I would love to have something like this. I've got a buddy that shoved a turbo 5.3 in one a few years back. I believe he said it ran a 9.90 before he had to pull the motor and crush the car.

I don't think I would be able to get all the way in the throttle in either car.

Crush the car?!?! Why would he do that?

Whats the average Vette weigh...3200, 3300? If so, 800-900 lbs

Maybe I've gotten used to it but it doesn't feel that crazy. I'm sure it's attributed to the smooth power delivery/broad torque curve of the LS motors.

Did I read that right that you have dual 2" exhaust? Thought about a pair of 2.5" electric cut-outs before the reducer from the collectors? I bet you would find some HUGE gains doing that.

Nah, it's all 3", X-pipe, no cats. The build thread for my custom headers/exhaust is in my sig. There's no power left on the table from the exhaust

Custom LT's next to the old shorties.

Yup, I've had a SBC 350ci in a 1st gen RX7 and while not completely scary it was a lot less pleasant to drive at the same power levels of my LS1. The LS engines can be perfect calm daily drivers when it calls for it and complete monsters when the road clears. Love them.

Great build!

Ok, I see...this is an old thread and you previously had a pair of tiny headers and smaller exhaust.

Awesome swap man.

Got a question - You've had your MaxJax for a couple years now - do you leave it up and assembled all the time?
