I plan to swap my 4gen drive train and interior into my 2nd gen. I was mulling over what to do with whats left. Since I want a mid/rear engined car and I dont really wanna spend the money on a GTM I thought about doing something like this.
I didnt really consider AWD
I did try to read through this and I was curious as to thought about balancing the car. I mean it was designed to have the engine in the front and alot of frame and engine will now be in the back. How do you plan to balance this or is this more about doing it and not making it perform at the track?

Hey Gang,
I don't have an LSx motor, but I am a HUGE fan and want to make a project with an LSx in the future.
Anyway, I am also a huge fan of AWD and I stumbled upon this thread and I thought I would share. I need to get my act together and get a new webpage, but here are some really old pictures of my AWD V8 project:
http://home.comcast.net/~xr4x4ti/V8_AWD_Pictures.htm
It is a turbo 331 SBF with a T56, Syclone TC, S10 front Diff, 8.8 IRS rear, Custom Axles, etc.
I don't think the AWD haters appreciate it because they have never been in a V8 awd car and are only used to 4 banger AWD cars with no low end torque. I FULLY agree that a properly setup drag car with slicks, etc will be faster off the line on a drag strip. But in the rear world, with normal tires, wet roads, sand, uneven pavement, etc it is just plain awesome. My car has about 550-600hp (did an 11.18@127 on only 11psi boost) you can pretty much mash the pedal anytime, anywhere. I once gave a ride to guy with a 1200rwhp (I saw the dyno sheet) and he was just blown away and said my car was much faster then his in street trim.
Anyway, if anybody has any questions, I would love to help others with AWD conversions. The fact that you can get the oilpan from a TBSS is just sick!! A 600+ hp AWD LSx would be so cool. I am looking into a first Gen CTS-V for my next AWD project.
Thanks,
Tim

Id have to say this is a cool project. If you did this to another car like say an F-body, that would be pretty bad as. I like that you actually accomplished it and have had success driving it.

From my understanding, the OP is currently deployed to the sand box.

I agree, bring this thing back! If you are out of country, hurry up and get back. I like anything that people convert to mid engine, AWD is just a plus.
As for people saying that $20,000 isn't enough, I 100% disagree. I am also doing a full frame build, he is not. As of right now, being 90% done with most of the expensive part bought, I am around the $10,000 range including the purchase of the vehicle. He should be fine with a $20,000 estimate.

I have thought about this before. I think these are the best options.

http://www.profabmachineinc.com/monster.html
You could offset both diffs to the same side.

I don get why there are so many sh*t talkers on the internet. The man has an idea, and he has the funds and hes working on finding the time, that's all there is too it. Hes overseas trying to protect the fat asses that have nothing better to do than to sit on their computer and talk smack. Good work sir, i hope you find the time and the car can come together

The trailblazer SS AWD transfer case would probably work pretty well.
The diff would either have to go through the oil pan like the trailblazer... and if using an LS motor you've got a pan available in the trailblazer SS ( at a penalty of raising the motor I'd bet), or the engine would need to be moved back 10 or 12 inches.
None of it's that insurmountable to a motivated guy with a welder and a 4.5" grinder.

People sure can suck. Looks to me like the guy has a job where he does more work by 9am than more people do all day. It also looks like he works on things more complicated than this car too. I'd bet if he wasn't off on the sand he would be done so fast most of these haters would crap a brick. I look forward to the end results even if it does take 5 years. I'm wrapping up my build and since it was not all in my control it has take about 2 years. Just how life happens some times, but it's harder to do your projects when working on it until 5am and weekends are all you can do.

This is very cool idea and the guys suggesting a TBSS donor may be on to something. Here's a link to similar build involving a Monaro (Aussie GTO): http://forums.justcommodores.com.au/...wd-monaro.html
