Default EROD LS3 & 4L70e into '87 Vette

Should have started this thread sooner...

I'm having an EROD LS3 & 4L70e swapped into my '87 Corvette by a shop with prior C4 LS swap experience. They gave me a detailed parts & labor quote last May & we've been corresponding ever since, working out details so this will go quickly. They gave me the green light late November & here's where things stand:
  • Engine, tranny, accesory set & torque converter purchased and delivered (credit card bill arrived Monday).
  • Car shipped & L98 and 700R4 pulled
  • I've been making myself a pest on a couple of forums trying to sell the L98
  • Shop has been working on the wiring & fuel system while the engine is out
  • Next, install fly-by-wire pedal, motor mounts, buy TCU (see seperate thread)
  • Hope to be done this month

Fuel pump installed today:

Two sets of exhaust manifolds come with the EROD:

Vette style come mounted on the engine:

But the instructions (and CA EO) say to use these Camaro manifolds:

We'll see which ones fit.

Keep the update and specfic coming.. was thinking that I might want to do my 88 C4 once I get the other projects out of the way and if the L98 lasts until I get around to it..

Is the shop Vetteworks ?.. I read that they make the F-Body Pump to Vette gas tanks kit .. is that why you got going?

You dont need to do that. Update the pump in your C4 with a 255 use a C5 filter with a built in regulator add a few fitting and run a line.
Here is how I did mine.

I'm going to clamp it in place when I run the trans cooler lines Sunday .. On a side note I was very impressed with the new style Russel quick connect to -6 AN connector. It actually screws in. I may go back and change the 2 on the filter later.

They were all set to install the engine yesterday but...

The EROD engine comes with a C6 flex plate designed to mate with a torque tube, not the 4L70e & torque converter we're using. They'll buy the correct flex plate & try the install again in the next day or so.

Wtf? The EROD was designed for pre-LS vehicles why would GM send them with torque tube flexlates?

Nice project none the less

Great looking swap, and I agree that is really dumb about the flexplate.

Yes, but...it appears that what comes in the box is a Corvette engine with the EROD "stuff" added---cats, exhaust manifolds, etc.

I suspect the Corvette/torque-tube flex plate may be the same as used with the 4L80e. According to at least one of my LS swap books the 4L80e flexplate has the spacer needed to interface LS engines with older transmissions. This is fine for retrofits & would have been great if we were using my 700r4, but doesn't mate up with the 4l70e.

When I described the fitment problem to a friend he asked how much was it off & I replied 'about $100 to $200'.

Got some pics of the engine in the car yesterday. It's been in and out several times over the last week fine tuning things. Tranny's not attached yet so tilted a bit:

Recommended (Camaro) manifolds fit fine:

New emissions canister:

Cool swap. I put an E-Rod in my 70 MC and 2 major components were defective. The ECU which is E-rod specific, was defective. Pace Performance replaced it, but it was a regular LS3 controller (no emissions). I got the replacement controller installed and it communicated with the OBD2 scanner this time. The car wouldn't start, but it did throw a code. It said that my DBW pedal was bad. So now I'm waiting for a replacement pedal. I haven't had real good luck with GMPP, I bought a single serpentine FEAD for my SBC 350 and the power steering pump was bad right out of the box and the alternator they shipped with it was the wrong one. Good luck with the swap

Yikes, I was hoping the warranty would act as a safety net for such things.

Tranny installed & final fitment from C beam to engine resolved. Engine moved forward a bit improving clearance to firewall & windshield wiper motor. Under car clearance looks good.

Good update on the swap.. keep them coming ... looks like moving the Engine/trans forward still left you a lot of room up front. How is all of the Accessories (pump, alternator, AC, etc) ? Waiting to see...!

So did you also move it forward to accomadate the C-Beam hole location (and keep from mod'ing that area) ?

Can we get a picture of the engine to firewall ?

Closest shots I have from the latest fitting:

Here are a couple from an earlier, engine only, fitting:

The tailshaft housing was transfered from the 700R4 to the new 4L70E & engine mounts redesigned/adjusted to get best fit.

Wow, that is close to the firewall.!

How is it going to be, when it comes time for spark plug changing? Look a little tight on number 8

I asked...the plugs nearest the firewall will have to be accessed from below the car.

Don't think I'll be doing that myself...

Getting to them from underneath should not be hard bud. If you have a set of ramps they should be easy. My #8 spark plug wire is just touching the A/C box a bit right at the boot. I think I may go with a diff style coils in the future. You look like you have more room than I do.

They were working on the exhaust Friday & decided there wasn't enough clearance to the firewall for the F-body manifolds so will be using the Corvette manifolds after all.
