Default LQ4/LQ9 conversion - list of sensors & other items

To continue on from my project thread, I thought I'd seperate this to here. I've been looking all morning but haven't really found what I was looking for.

I am converting a LQ4/9 to "hybrid" motor, consiting of L92 heads with LS3 intake. All the truck acc. will be switched over to the fbody style. The harness and computer are from the LQ4 and will be modified/tuned.

Are the LS sensors the same as LQ sensors? Does anyone have a complete list of sensors needed for the LQ4 or LS3 style intake..or a list of what I would need for this build?

Last but not least, When it comes to the MAF, which one should I go with? And is there anything else you think I would need?

Thanks!

The only difference is, injector connectors, the MAP sensor, the Thottle body, and the alternator if using the F-body one.

Sensor location on Gen III Vortec Truck Engines

1 – IAC, Idle Air Control
2 - TPS, Throttle Positioning Sensor
3 – Evaporative Canister Purge Valve, (EVAP) Not need remove
4 – Knock Sensor connector, two sensors under intake manifold
5 - Map Sensor, Manifold Absolute Pressure
6 - Water Temperature Sensor
7 - Crankshaft Position Sensor
8 – Camshaft position Sensor
9 - Oil Pressure Sensor.

Not shown here
MAF, Mass Air Flow Sensor, located on the air inlet tube
VSS, Vehicle Speed Sensor, located on Transmission tailshaft
Oxygen Sensors, Vortec has 4, two before the cat and two after. Pre cat O2 sensors will be used others will be deleted
Oil Pan Level sensor, Can be removed as well

Wow thank you! Great post I will def. add this to the LQ4 how-to build list.

Does anyone know where the sensors get re-located to on the LS3 intake? I'm sure I can just use a harness adapter for the MAP and MAF sensor as well as converting the injector harness connection to one that fits the LS3?

EDIT: current truck TB is DBW, I will be switching to DBC

The MAP sensor is on the front of the LS3. So you'll have to extend the truck MAP wire. You should be able to reuse the truck one on the LS3 its just alittle smaller than the LS3 one but people have been making them work. Or just get the adapter for it as well.

What MAF sensor would be best in my application? Using an LQ4 computer/harness with LS3 intake.

The stock 5pin truck MAF will work. But might limit HP if going for max power.

The truck one and LS6 units are 5-pin and 85mm. The early LS1 were smaller 3 pin 75mm units.

I wouldn't to aftermarket just get a truck one save your money!

I thought the LS3 Injectors and Truck injectors both had the same connectors, EV6? I know they are different height and are not interchangeable but I though the harness connector was the same.

I have a camaro ls3 intake and LSA topend I am putting on an 03 LQ4 with the truck harness, sounds similar to the OP plan. I thought I didnt need the injector harness adapters but my ls3 intake didnt come with injectors to compare.

Great thread guys, swapping an LQ9 into my third gen and this helps immensely since I'm going EFI from Carb and know next to nothing about this whole "Sensor" thing lol...

I am actually kind of glad you bumped this old thread. I too and starting an LQ4 build with hopes to find a clean 3rd gen. I will be bookmarking this for reference.

Great thread. I'm going the other way. My truck motor died in my 06 Escalade so I'm Re-purposing the gen 3 6.0 motor I was building for my 84 TA for the truck. My ECM is tuned for the LS6 intake and I don't want to get new injectors (trying to save a little money) so I'm going to drop the engine in directly with the LS6 intake. I've been looking for what sensors would be in different spots/where I"d need to change the harness if at all. Doing with a Speed Density tune so the MAF really isn't applicable. Any help is appreciated on knowing which needs to move where. Thanks!

Default Thank You to Bo185

This is the first time I have ever worked on an LS or vortec motor. I would have never found the cam sensor and crank sensor locations. As you can see my install is a little backwards and sideways compared to what you guys are normally working on.

This may be an old thread but it's just what I was looking for. Putting an LQ4 in a 66 Caprice! I want to keep it simple and reliable.
