Default Tach pinout location on E38 ECM truck motor is plugged from the factory. What to do?

I'm trying to add the tach pinout to my wiring harness and I was told to use pin 48 on J1/X1 connector. I also added the VSS input/output connections and that went fine. But the pin 48 is plugged from the factory with "Molded-in or single grommet seal plugs are used to seal unused circuit locations". So, how have others got a tach signal from E38 ECM off truck motors; mine is 2010 L96 6.0 (flexfuel LY6). Thoughts on how to do this?

Thx!

Pin 48 is correct, also programming has to be done in PCM to get it set up for proper signal output I believe.

I did a 2010 camaro harness with the e38, added the wire for tach. I remember it being closed off like you mentioned, but I either poked something in there to open it up, or small drill bit, can't remember to be honest.

Is there any metal or anything on the other side that I could damage with a small drill bit? I'm sure I can open the hole, just not sure what else I'll do!

Drill? Nope..... Just pop the connector cap off and pull the blue plastic plug out and use one of the spare pins from some other part of the ECM conn that you dont need a slide it through ( wire first ) and it clicks into place. Voila your done

The caps are a pain to get off just take your time and you will figure it out. W/O stealing the thread can anyone tell me where I can get good information on converting my harness to a standalone system? I dont have the cash to buy one that has been done already.

The caps come off easy just remember you want to take the male side off. Meaning the cap over the pin connectors themselves NOT the back side cap that holds the wires in place etc. Just use a flat screw driver and carefully pry it up and off ( might have to go side/side for a bit ) ive done it hundreds of times now and havent broken one yet. The little plastic tabs inside that hold the pins in places though are pretty small so be careful once inside the connector.

As for wiring up your own harness? Seriously man read stickies they are your BEST friend. Here ya go

You need to sign up at AllDataDIY. It's about $35 for one car and it's good for an entire year. You can print any schematic you need for that motor/car.

lt1swap.com is also very helpful for harness information.
