Default LS1 into Camaro 67, positioning of engine

Hi, my first post here. I am installing a stock 98 Camaro LS1 engine into my Camaro 67, im trying to use as much stock parts as possible, atleast for now. Im hoping to use stock Camaro 98 manifolds. Stock generator position and im not to keen on modifying the oil pan, I've seen that some does that.

I'was thinking of using "s&p" eng mounts, which im gonna make myself (dont bother to send two mounts to Norway), is my engine gonna fit then? or do i need to modify the pan?

If the pan hits the steering rod thingy , will the frame hit the generator if i move the engine backwards?.

Im using an T56 gearbox btw, its probably gonna restrict how far back i can i have the engine, the stick is gonna sit in the back seat ..

The engine is hanging over the bay now, im mounting the powdercoated frame to the Car this weekend.

Can someone write what i should think of? how do i make my speedometer work/which speedometer should i use?

Any other things? i guess i can use the steering pump on the ls1 to feed my old steering box, just have to make som connections.

Well the real thing that limits the engine moving back is the firewall -- Even with my engine back close to the firewall we still needed to notch the oilpan.. see this pic:

You can see that if the pan was not notched it would have hit the centerlink.. the only way around that is to run a rack/pinion system.

Im running the stock alternator but would have been unable to run the AC compressor in the factory location without modifying the frame.. good thing i dont like AC

My fbody LS1 pump works my gearbox fine..

See my website for lots of pics of the buildup.. good luck with the project..

I did not have to cut the oil pan in my nova(same chassis as camaro) but I smoothed the firewall and have a recessed area of 1" around the engine. I fabbed my own mounts. So you have three choices. Cut the pan, Cut the firewall, or relocate to front mount rack and pinion. Good luck

Thanks for the reply. good information. Im gonna modify the pan then, its not that difficult, i know a good aluminum welder just cut up som 6061 weldable aluminum i guess. Do you have a measure ment of how much you modified it? doesnt the oilpan have a special design that is meant for the engine? just wondering if anyone have heard anything about modifying the pan.

Did you use origina camarols1 manifolds? maybe its easier to get room for them if i move the engine back?

Depending on how far you notch the oil pan back, the oil pickup tube might have to be lengthened to move the pickup further back into the modified sump.

I went with the LS1 camaro steering rack/pinion, so I won't have to modify the pan.

I took the oil pan off earlier today, i see what you mean about moving the pickup. is it ok for the pickup to se pretty close to the wall of the pan? I might try not to move the pick up.

Are the headers you used on youre setup on the internet somewhere?'

Did you get everything you needed to install the instruments in the car with that "stewart warner power series" kit?

I didnt use manifolds. I took a net of small block chevy headers and cut off the flanges and used Gm performance parts flanges and mandrel tubing from Jegs.
