96 made the proper box as well, but you've got to check the alpha code on them to make sure you have the correct one.

1992.5-1993 Alpha code AL or BT
1994 Alpha code AL, BT, or PD
1995 Alpha code JH
1996 Alpha code KD
1997-1998 Alpha code WK or BT

Interesting. On Rock Auto, some manufacturers list from 93-98 on their boxes, some break at 96-98. I can tell you my 96 works fine.

where does one find these codes on the box?
is it a casting number or a sticker that may have gone MIA over the years?

Bumping this since I'm looking for a box alternative for my 67 Firebird. I think it will work, I have a 3rd gen box in the car now and it looks identical to these Grand Cherokee boxes. What's the spline count on the input shaft? Looks to be the same as a 3rd gen box...

The 3rd gen box is the best fit for a first gen F body. From what I've learned the jeep box turns much sharper then a camaro so the internal stops are not matched up. I'm sure they are both saginaw 800 type boxes, but you don't want your car to turn further then it's designed for.

makes sense. I just looked up 3rd gen new/reman boxes on AZones site and they aren't too bad @ $120. I like the GC box idea as I can get them cheaper. Thanks for the info

100% Correct. I have a jeep box in mine, and it produces a little tire rub on the frame on hard corners (like turning around in a parking lot or doing a u turn). But, it does feel a lot tighter than the original box. On center is not as numb.

yup I can confirm the jeep box doesn't work in a 1st gen Camaro/Firebird and not on purpose. I ordered a reman'ed box from AZ and got a 3 Turn L2L box that was ordered by application (88-92 Camaro Firebird) and got a jeep box which when mounted is extremely tight turning and also puts the angle of the box about 5 degrees higher than the rag joint coupling which made it almost bind when turning. Cant trust part store reman boxes, it should have been a 3rd gen box 2.25-2.5 turns lock to lock.
