ar design: E28 LSx Turbo Budget-Ish Build
Just picked up an E28. I've been itching to do an LSx turbo build ever since I sold my twin turbo C6 a few years back.
So.... Here goes! Build will take place over the next 2-4 months, depending on how over budget I go
11-8-12
Engine removed, started working on stripping interior, insulation, and absolutely everything that is not essential. We are going to try and have this thing down to about 2500lbs.
BMW insulation is HEAVY!

Update..... Got the motor apart. Regapping the top rings to .026. They are .015 currently. Bottom rings are fine, no need to re-gap. Broke one of the OEM rings, had to get a set of new ones, $49. OEM pistons were FILTHY. So much carbon. And the oil control rings were totally gummed up / frozen. Once finished re-gapping rings, installed some ARP2000 rod bolts (pre-01 motors have weak rod bolts), got a Weldon 2035 pump and a Weldon 2040 FPR off eBay. And my Tex Racing T101 showed up today! Turns out the seller DID include the shift linkage ($$$) and all I need is a shift rod. W00!
Right now, shopping for a NASCAR triple plate clutch on eBay.

More progress!!!!!!!!!!
Engine and transmission are mated......
Getting ready to go in.....
Come to papa!
Almost there.....
Transmission ended up needing more room. So....we decided to give it more room!
And its in!! Engine mounts and transmission mounts are done, pics of those when I get them out of car. Engine mounts are available for sale.
GTO oil pan fits perfectly, no mods!
Taking undercoating off to weld new tranny crossmember in....
Fabricating a new tunnel, and pushing the firewall back to make room for the exhaust....
Flanges for tunnel to attach to via DZUS fasteners.
Intercooler core... its HUGE! 4.5" thick!
Random.

Nice. I believe this is the second E28 LSx build I've seen (not sure if the other is on here, but its definitely on BF.C). I've thought about going this route or an E34 (E38 would be great too, but everyone that starts that swap quits) but they seem less supported than E36 & E39 builds.
Would the tranny tunnel be an issue on a lot of builds, or is it as a result of your dogleg transmission? I'm kind of n00b to this stuff, so I had to google what one of these transmissions were...

This is 100% due to the transmission. A toploader T101 would clear more than likely, and I know the T56s fit with minor clearing as well. I was just really set on running a crashbox )

Launching!
Nice build. Been following this on bf.c as well.
Todd from TCD is currently building a single turbo LS1 E28. He sends me pix of it from time to time and it's coming along well but not sure if he has a build thread online anywhere.

The e28 might just have the kind of "character" I'm looking for in a build, with some lipo of course (bumper tuck). If there's any chance that motor comes back out to finish up the mounts, would it be possible to take some measurements of the room to work with in there? If I ever get around to it, I may have other ideas in mind to consider besides an LSx... Keep us posted! (If you are on BF.c and update that more often, let me know what subforum its in, didn't see it in the Engine Conversions section)
