Why is an "X" pipe/crossover pipe so important?
For my 75 Mercedes 4 door LR4 swap I am running two individual side pipes. The exhaust is already done. I could connect them with a crossover pipe under the bell housing. Why would I want to do that? What is the theory behind X pipes?
as Toughy said.. you can find many articals by googling it on the web with a lot of good information.
IMO, If possible, use an X or H pipe in your system. But if Performance is not critical for you and to use one is more of a problem or cost is an issue, you can get away with out one just fine.

The crossover pipe will greatly reduce that pulsing V8 exhaust note. If you're looking to quiet down the exhaust a bit, it will help. Judging by your system layout, I doubt you'll gain any performance.
