My 73 camaro gt45 turbo 5.3 build thread
I built this car for the first time when I was 18 I'm 30 now and here we go again. Some of the work I don't have picture's of, such as sitting in all bare metal after sand blasting. I lost my phone that a tun of those pics were on lol.
So here she is after years of waiting on me to love on her lol.
Sand blasted and epoxy primed, with the doors body worked and in 2k primer.
Some rust repair.
Through the floor sub frame connector
Smoothing the fire wall.
And more to come soon.

Mini tub
On the mini tub I decided to save some money and used the original inner tubs that I cut out. I do all of my welding and fab work so I'm not worried about the extra time it takes to reuse them.

motor build
Don't get to excited. I built this motor awhile back for my 98 camaro. The motor got some dyno time and around 300 street miles. I decided to part the car out so I could put the money into the 73.
Machine work & 0 balance done by Tommy goza
Droping the crank in the block
Diamond Forged flat tops with -2cc valve reliefs with 4340 H beam rods
First piston in the hole
All pistons in and rings gaped for a 300 shot of the funny stuff
All new gaskets seals and a ms3 cam on a 110 lsa
Prc stg 2.5 5.3 heads
Heads instead
Oil pan, timing cover, valve covers, balancer installed. All painted smoke gray

Update. I picked up a 4.8 for 400$ so the build has changed directions a bit. I will be going to a gt45 blow through carb setup.

Ok so I got the motor home and started going over it. The tab on the head gasket says 4.8 but I found 5.3 in factory writing on the crank. Can anyone tell me what this motor really is? I think its a 5.3.

looking good so far! I dont know the answer to the crank question, but I know some of the ls engines share the same crank, I think the 4.8 & 5.3 share the same one, but dont hold me to it.

4.8 Specs
4.8 stroke: 3.268
4.8 rod : 6.275
4.8 deck height: 9.240
5.3 Specs
5.3 stroke:3.622
5.3 rod: 6.098
5.3 deck height: 9.240
So it looks like I have a 5.3.

I started mocking up the turbo placement using my ls1. I'll be cleaning up the 5.3 over thw next few weeks. Here is a pic of what I came up with for turbo placement.

Thanks! I am having a lot of fun with this build so far. I have never done a budget build before, but I must say it is way more fun than any of my no expense spared builds that I've done in the past.
My plans are to push the stock 5.3 as far as she can go, then when she blows up I'll slap the forged ls1 in it and go for broke again lol.

If you check the casting numbers on the crank, that will tell you.
This is from a sticky at the top of this section of the forum (LSx Engine Identification) This is copied and pasted from post #40
" I decided to go ahead and pull the pan and check the crankshaft casting number...12552216. It is a 5.3! "

I got my 2.25" pipe from pipe from Columbia River mandrel bending. Here's some pics of the progress.
I smoothed and knife edged the entry of the flange for better flow.
