Have you considered a turbo? I assume you already have an overdrive gear...

I know this is the conversion section, but it's really hard to beat the mileage in a C5 Vette. My '04, even tubbed with big rubber and procharged, will easily do 30 on the highway. Buy a stock M6 coupe and put narrow rubber inflated to 35psi, and you'll have a MPG machine that's still fun to drive. $12k would probably get you a high miler, but $15k should get you a really decent driver.

I get low 20's back and forth to work everday and 26-27 on the highway with my car (stock tune and 87 octane fuel). Its a 71chevelle 05 5.3,4l60,2.73 gears, with a 275/45/17 rear tire. I have just over $1700.00 in the complete swap that's engine, tranny, oil pan, manifolds, fuel system, wiring, computer, and drive shaft.
So with the buget you are working with you should be able to buy a great car to start with do the swap and have money left over.

That's exactly what I did, except for the hookers and beer. 2 years ago, I bought a Ford Festiva for $700, put another $500 into it and have put 50,000 trouble free miles on since. It gets 40 mpg and I have saved thousands of dollars in fuel. I can give a rats *** what others think about what I drive.

Or, you could join the cool kids club:

Says he's looking to trade for a tahoe/yukon. I easily get over 20mpg avg.

Thanks for the input fellas. Gives me a lot to think about. I'll most likely draw out my options on paper and pull some calculations to see what suits me best.

Or I could just wait to move in with my girl in October and have her get the CTS-V for me to drive
