Finally got the car onto the rotisserie.









Now to remove the windows and begin removing paint and other debris from all sides of the car...

 

oh how i dream of having of 70 camaro on a rotis!

Did some grinding on the rear quarter, found some ****** in the armor...






I have gone from a DA to an 8 inch grinder to an angle grinder with a flap disc. There is a lot of paint and filler to eat up in these parts.

 

Made some more progress on stripping the car. I picked up a 7 inch electric grinder and some coarse pads. It went a lot faster than the DA. It was way to cold to push the car outside, so I striped it inside. What a huge mess it made. I will be cleaning my garage for several years now...



So this is kind of odd. When we removed the glass today, we noted that the area in the far back of the package tray was a darker metallic green. We can't think of a reason for this. With the work on the rear quarters and the signs of collision on the back end, we wonder if the car got smoked bad back in the day and they replaced it with some OEM parts from a darker green Camaro? Could be wrong? These are some pics of the area.

 

Rats! When I cleaned out the trunk gutter I found a ton of rust and holes. I am not sure what to do, maybe clean it up very good and try to weld a plate over it? I will have to put new studs in for the trim clips. One of my goals for this project is to flush mount the windows. I am not sure how to do it, but I have seen it done. It would eliminate future water issues. If anyone has any ideas on how this is done, please let me know.

 

The bottom of the car is surprisingly clean.



The doors are rust free, males me wonder if they are original! The passenger door has been banged up pretty good.





The rotisserie has been super helpful in getting this done. Around here, I got prices of around 1500 bucks to media strip a car. They told me it was based on time and material, so I am trying to strip as much as I can, then they can get the nooks and crannies without it costing me a fortune.

Looking like good progress thus far. Looks like its time for a AMD drivers quarter panel at a minimum. IIRC, the trunk gutters are avail. through OER. I'd look for a sponsor to source this.

Member futureuser is a vendor for AMD and gave me a estimate for quarters and tail panel for my 70 Camaro and his prices where by far the cheapest I could get. His shipped prices where noticeably cheaper than others BEFORE shipping. It might be worth looking into.

Did some cutting on the rear quarter. This old girl needs some new sheetmetal. And probably someone who can put it on as well!

 

Don't be scared, you can re-skin that no problem. I just pulled my 71 bird off the rotisserie and had many of the same issues. I was hoping for better but you have to plan for the worst. Here is a pic on the rotisserie after I patched up the quarter and started filler work. Then a pic after I took it off, coated in epoxy primer, and put on a jury rigged cart I build out of 2Xs.

 

Thanks for the pep talk! I admit to being pretty nervous about this, but I hope I can pull it off. Got some more work done today! I'll get some pics up.

 

Spent some time plugging away on the 70 this afternoon. I bought a spot weld cutter and tried my hand at removing the passenger side quarter. It was REALLY hard. I need to acquire the proper touch for this. I managed to cut through both layers of sheetmetal numerous times.

Spent 5 hours on the Camaro today, doesn't look like I got much done.This stripping and grinding is time consuming! My passenger quarter and some of the underlying panels are rusted through. I guess I need to figure out if I weld or replace. My trunk areanear the rear tail panel is also looking crusty. I hope this thing is worth saving.

The floors seem pretty good, with the exception of the rear passenger floor. The driver side quarter/rocker area is also pretty good.

This is the area below the driver side door hinge. I think there should have been a drain of some sort to drain the water from the cowl area. Mine was full of crud blocking it, most likely causing this.


A few holes here. I wonder should I replace this area, or try to weld/plate them shut?



A thing of beauty. I may not have to do anything to this area!


A rotisserie sure does make working on the underside easier. But it still isn't fun. I cut off the remains of the old Competition Engineering subframe connectors, and now need to grind the welds off.

You got lucky under those rear seats. They don't repop those pans and mine were crap. I had to piece them together from misc pans and it still didn't look great.

That camaro is certainly repairable so keep going. ;-) Just take your time and don't get in a rush, you've got the skills if you can get it this far. That's my favorite body style and I miss my last one, a 70 SS project that I traded for a my current 4th gen Formula. I wish I had the time to undertake a project like this again. Good luck!

Continued working on the Camaro today. Got the outside of the fenders stripped off, no surprises there, except that they are repops from overseas. My cousin bought this car in 84, I bought it from him in 88, and other than painting it, never did any body work to it. So I am sort of surprised by the way the body presents. This car had a rough first 14 years!

Not sure how to separate the tail panel from the rear quarter and the trunk



This is the sticker that was on the inside of the fenders. Any idea who this is or when it may have been produced?
