Default Stock oil pressure sender needed in LS swap?

So I pulled the old sender out and installed a T fitting for my gauges. When someone noticed it in a picture they told me I need to get one of the T fittings from ebay that have a hole in the top for the stock sending unit because it is needed for the ECU.

Is the stock sending unit really needed, and what does the ECU do with the oil pressure information? I thought it was just for the stock gauge and dash lights, which I don't have.

Gen III engines don't need the oil pressure sender, most wiring diagrams I've seen send it directly to a gauge or light in the dash. I think there are some Gen IV engines that send the oil pressure signal to the PCM. I say this because I believe I've seen it listed as an available PID to datalog and I thought I saw an SES code for it in one of the PCM's I was looking at.

I've always eliminated it and never had any ill effects.

I did not use one. I plumbed an autometer sending unit into the port and ran the signal straight to the gage.

Many of the earlier engine (Gen III) setups didn't use the oil pressure signal to the ECU/PCM but was in communication with the BCM and then on to the Dash Gauges.

This could be different for the VVT and DOD engines. What engine (year) and ECM are you using ?

I'll try to look for a different T fitting then. I'm using the port for both oil pressure gauge and turbo oil feed and cannot find a T fitting anywhere. The only T fitting I've found is a 3" spacer that you screw the sender back into the top of, that has 2 holes drilled into the sides that are tapped for 1/8" NPT.

I might pick up one of these and drill into the side for a 1/8" NPT fitting: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Oil-Pressure-Sender-Adapter-LS1-LS2-LSx-16mm-x-1-8-NPT-/171278471172?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item27e0fe1004&vxp=mtr

You can just remove the top of the stock sender and drill/tap the remains for 1/8" pipe thread, then add a readily available T. easy to do.

Going off the 5.3, the factory sender is on the back top of the block drivers side. If you don't need the factor sender buy their adapter and put it right there. If you need the factory sender then don't buy their adapter and drill and tap for 1/8 pipe and the oil cooler cap off plug for your gauge sender.

On a 2006 gen3 engine you don't need the factory sender. Just break off the plastic portion of it and get down to just the aluminum part of it, then drill and tap it to fit whatever sender came with your gauges. Then for the turbo feed, drill and tap the block off plate above the oil filter. You could reverse the two if it makes it any easier.

I bought my auto meter gauges from car shop Inc and they had everything I needed to make it work on my ls1. It uses an adapter and uses an older style oil pressure sending unit. If I can find a link I'll post it.

My problem is that the turbo is on the passenger side of the car so I need to use the factory sending unit location for the turbo oil feed. I was hoping to just tap into the side of this fitting for another 1/8" port for the oil pressure gauge.

I have one of the adapters that KUP used to sell to add up to three oil feeds and a sending unit. It didn't work with the FAST manifold. If you want it, shoot me a PM.
