So....this happened yesterday morning. I was not hurt at all, but the same can't be said for the Cougar. I am pretty bummed out...

Be safe out there and never forget that these old cars are death traps.

Yup - glad you’re ok Andrew. Everything else is replaceable. What happened?

Perhaps it’s time to drop that drivetrain into something that stops and handles better and is safer. I have an idea....

What's your idea?

There was a guy in the left lane going 20 mph, slowing down to make an left turn through the median of the highway. I saw him too late because I was behind a box van....hit the brakes...from then on I was just along for the ride. Thankfully I stopped before going down into that 50 foot ditch...

Again - you're whole and that's what matters.

I drive an LS powered V O L V O and you have to ask what my idea for a safer car for you is? (chuckle)

Find another Cougar if this one is beyond hope, then put a SERIOUS handling package and BAER or Wilwood brakes on it, then drop your drivetrain in and DONE!
SOOOOO easy...… lol

And remember, the TIRES stop the car. The brakes stop the tires.

Yeah, I kinda figured that might be a foregone conclusion, but it's good you brought it up!

Saw it at a cruise in just a couple of weeks ago -- big rotors/calipers on the front with skinnies. Kids.

This car actually has great brakes and handles way better than a stock Cougar. I think part of the issue was that as I hit the brakes, I was simultaneously going over a bumpy bridge. I am pretty sure that this unloaded the rear tires and it was all over at that point.

Too soon to decide about its fate? Did the guard rail do the rear quarter damage?

Went back and took a closer look at the pic Andrew.....yes, that took a pretty hard hit. Did it deform the C-pillar (roof support)? Bend the wheel/damage rearend or rear suspension?

That’s bad news to hear about the car, but I’m glad to hear you walked away in good shape. Time for a Mad Max style pick-up truck project for you so you can put the hurt on the next guy that gets in your way.

I agree these old cars are death traps even with updated brakes, suspension and tires. Lots of people think they are built out of old heavy steel which they are, and can handle anything. With the engineering in newer cars with parts that are made to crumple and detach to deflect the impact are much safer. My brother is missing a foot or so of intestines from a head on collision in his 66 GTO with the solid steering column that does not collapse, then collapsible steering columns became mandatory in 1967. I too drive a 66 LS swapped GTO with all the upgraded suspension, brakes and tires, and a retrofitted collapsible steering column, but I find myself driving it less and less for the fear of something happening to it like in Andrews case, I don’t want to get hit by Bubba in his moms station wagon because he was high on meth and has no insurance. I probably will sell it and get my money and run, and as Andrew calls them, buy me an appliance that looks like every other appliance on the road, to be my daily driver.

Sorry to hear of the accident Andrew. I'm glad to see you are in one piece and safe. Are you going to rebuild the Cougar, swap the drive train or just go without for a while?
