1980 Camaro LS TURBO Swap
Well my project is 80 percent done but people have been asking me to post the build. More pics should a been taken but this is sorta how it went.
The car started out as a 350 Aluminum head sbc, Non roll bar car. Trans braked turbo 350 with a 3800 nitrous converter. 10 bolt with a 4.88 gear. Car ran in the not very impressive 11.70's. Just wasn't happy with the setup.
I purchased a LY6 with a 100000 or so KM on it , while setting the motor in I found the front of the truck pan alittle too deep for my liking and couldn't drop the motor as much as I wanted . Also found out the back of the truck pan was waay too far past the cross member. So I hunted down a F body pan. Its shallower at the front allowing the motor to sit farther down, draw back .....had to nip the cross member slightly.

Deciding where the turbo was gonna go. You know where you want it but so many factors, enough room in front for filter, enough room for the hood to sit down, oil routing, compressor routing. Either way as you can see the turbo is solid mounted to the frame which of course meant solid motor mount.
As you can see, the motor is a vvt. At this time I didn't have a regular timing cover so I made spacers for the electric water pump I was using so I had an idea where everything was when doing the hot side. Looking back I shoulda had the right cover , woulda saved me some grief down the road. Things start to get real interesting here.

I also have an 80 Z28. I have a 5.3 with a GT45 turbo. Its fuel injected and i have been playing with the hp tuners. Your turbo is placed close to where mine is but mine sits higher. WHat other specs to your setup?

Motor wise the motor is a stock square port head LY6 . Originally i was going to run this this naturally aspirated but changed my mind to turbo. That being said i used the N/A cam for the build. The cam is a Sinnister cam 591 601 230 236 on a 112. As far as other mods I have done to it texas speed has supplied cam gears and chain, LS 9 Head gaskets and intake gaskets Brian Tooley for the 650 lift double springs , titanuim retainers and pushrods. I did the rocker arm bearing upgrade with the comp cams kit. ARP headbolts . Powerbond 10% underdriven balancer. Gm single plane intake. Holley 750 intake modded by me with the Hanger 18 editorial. Other then that MSD 6012 ignition box ( super easy to hook up), and run the same spark plug wires I got with the motor. Mezuire electric water pump to cool it. Turbo wise I picked up a S 475 from Forced Inductions. It s the 75/ 83 wheeled on with a 1.10 t6 housing.

Bought some 2 1/4 u bends and started the hot side. I ended up using only one flex joint , used it only on the drivers side. Couldn't figure out the passenger side for the life of me but finally came across a pic and basically copied it . Its different but it does work!
As you can see I actually cut the drivers side v band off, it was just touch the steering knuckle so I moved it below the steering box, I like it there much better!

Being its a Plastic nosed Camaro it has lots of room for an inter cooler in the nose. I picked up a 31x 12 x4 CRX racing inter cooler tried it in the nose of the car, fit like a glove.
Also in this pic I have exchanged the older non vvt 6.0 in there to fit everything including the water pump.

This is what happens when your welding up the hotside without having the waterpump in the car with the correct timing cover on the motor........geez I now have a lower hose issue ! After pages of reading on here I read something bout the Trail blazer water neck, went to the wreckers and got one , cut it and reattached , it'll get me by!

Next the dreaded alternator bracket. Picked up what I believe to be a WS 130 from an early 90's truck. Brought it home and finally decided to mount on the upper drivers side. Passenger side was getting waay to busy and lower drivers wasn't an option cause I wanted to use the dummy pulley on the water pump for deflection of the belt.. Stared at it for a few hours and started drawing it out on a piece of 3/ 16 plate.......I'll stop there cause to make a long story short I built the bracket and it wasnt strong enough, on to the 1/4 inch ! Finished it, seemed to work out good , used a snowmobile steering arm for the tenisoner, just cut it down the normal thread end, tapped it , put the hime joint back in and done.

Race Parts Solutions sent me some goodies. My exhaust side reducer came but the fat part of it continued over the control arms too far for my like possibly creating a clearance problem if the car bounced to much, so I proceeded to cut and section it.
I also welded on some pipe for the wastegates, this was not particularly fun !
