Look at www.speedhut.com Nice gauges, a bit high but able to customize. There is also dolphin gauges which are cheaper I think.
On par, I like the Speedhut the best

You can run any gauges you want. The only one that needs to be electronic is the tach. The speedo can be mechanical if you're running a trans with a mechanical output.
I'm running all stock gauges on my 68 vette. Mechanical speedo, converted electric tach, mechanical oil pressure, electric original temp (just use the original sender)

Check out our new LS gauge controller and see if it fits your needs.

+1

Pretty easy to adapt the sensors off the old motor to the new one. Lots of threads on how to do so. Analog speedo can be a bit more of a hassle depending upon the trans. Many aftermarket transmissions have both electronic and mechanical outputs. A couple of companies make modified tailhousings that convert a modern trans to mechanical output. You can also buy a cable box that drives a mechanical speedo from the VSS output. They are pricey and seems like lots of people complain about problems.

Keep in mind if you upgrade to new gauges you often need to find a new way to include things like high beam indicators, turn signal, etc. Never worked on a 55 so don't know if that is an issue.

What body harness are you running? I have an autowire setup specific to tri-fives made it easy for either new electric guages or stock style gauges. My 6.0 is utilizing mechanical gauges by using speed and performance adapters to fit sending units. Good luck and enjoy!

I'm running a GPS speedo and a quad (temp/volt/oil/fuel) Speedhut, both 3-3/8". Absolutly love them.

I was looking at building a custom one for my 55 nomad using an original. But it would still require mounting the other smaller gauges in a console. So I’m leaning towards the Dakota digital in a black face with white letters to mimic the original. http://www.dakotadigital.com/index.c...rod/prd719.htm

This is the one I mocked up using autometer gauges.

Speedhut is exactly what you need. Get a pair of their quad gauges and and speedo with the tach in it and you're set.

You can make a million different combos with all of the color options. Oh, and you can make them light-up whatever color you want at night.

Thanks but only 3-3/8 gauges will fit in the 55 bezel. I already mocked up classic instruments version of the speed hut gauges with all in 2 and I felt it just doesn't flow with the dash itself. And having to use 3-3/8 makes it very hard to read the gauges. I'm not getting any younger lol. That is the main reason I'm considering the DD VS setup.

While I personally prefer the look of the NVU gauge that i posted above, I can't disagree with the other guys about speedhut gauges. I have a set of my own for my 71 Cutlass and I'm impressed with their product.

Wow your right that is a nice gauge from NVU!! I don't care for red needles but overall a very original look. I had seen these before from another supplier but they only offered white back grounds. This one is very nice and on the top of my list now.
Thanks
Rocky

Depending on which generation ECU you are using Speedhut offers the can-bus series. These take the signal off the ALDL and make a really clean install.
