Default Whistle

Just got the '39 on the road. It has a 2003 LM4/4L65E with "elephant trunk" fresh air intake folded back over the engine. In first and second there is a whistling sound that get louder until shift and starts again only not as loud in second. Seems RPM related. Can't find a vacuum leak but I did get codes P0171/P0174 after running around for a while. Does not do it in high gear even when I step on it. Any ideas? Stock engine/trans.

Those are lean codes for each bank. It must be sucking air from somewhere.

When I got mine running I had a whistle too and found out that I forgot to hook up the PCV fresh air line up on the passenger valve cover. I never threw a code but it's one of those dumb things to check first before you start checking intake seal and other "bigger" jobs.

It threw codes P0171/174 after ten miles and while sitting at idle for about 10 minutes. The passenger side PCV fresh air line is hooked up and spraying WD40 around doesn't change the idle. Agree that there is a vacuum leak, just got to find it.

As a side note there is a small oil leak with a few drops coming off the right front of the transmission. How it's getting there is also a head scratcher. Wonder if somehow they are connected.

I had a high rpm whistle and high positive fuel trims. Searched and searched for the leak. Turned out to be a bad power brake booster.

Got to drive it a little today and last night. After about 5 miles it set code P0174 last night. That code is passenger side lean I believe. Today it set codes P0171/174 which is lean condition on both banks. This is a box-stock engine which I only had the intake off and put a new gasket on when I reinstalled the intake. I did NOT have an inch/pound torque wrench so I used the " that's good" method of bolt torque. The O2 sensors are new. Still have to crawl under the car and look at the collectors and see if they are opening up after heating up. Any ideas?

Default Fuel pressure

May have stumbled on the reason for the codes. Noticed that all was fine up until I got on the loud pedal. Wonder if the fuel pump is not keeping up with demand. It's a stock Trailblazer in tank unit that I got off Ebay. Pressure reads fine in the garage but I need to test it under load. Anybody feel like taking a ride on the front fender of a '39 Chevy? Not much to hang on to and the fender is sort of round. Outside of that method, is there a cheaper (but safe) method of monitoring fuel pressure while driving?
