Protect the wires that go to the starter and the other wires near the alternator that are close to the block.

generic headshielding tape. wrap it at an extreme diagonal to cover the entire wire without overusing the tape.

usually cheap. 10-15 bucks. fancy stuff is 20+. small price to pay for protecting things.

the cheap stuff claims its good to 1000degreesF. i havent had a problem yet.

GM stuff costs like 3 dollars an inch almost they dont let me near that stuff.

I prefer the heat sleeves they sell in rolls. They sell it in different diameters. IMO it looks a lot better than the tape. Just my .02

I second, lots easier to use also. Fairly inexpensive as well. Depending on size. I have used a few pieces in my project and others in the past.
