Default Wiring Gurus, I need a sanity check please...

So I decided to build my own coil harnesses for the Cougar. From what I can tell by looking at the stock coil harnesses is that they are identical from side to side. The colors are all the same, but because they are identical, the same colors go to different coils. For instance:

Pink = all coils
Black = all coils
Brown = all coils
Purple = #8 and #1
Light Blue = #6 and #3
Green = #4 and #5
Red = #2 and #7

Can someone that knows better please confirm this or set me straight?

Good timing on your question Andrew. I don't have an answer for you, but the answer could also effect me. I have my valve covers and intake flipped 180 degrees (throttle body to trans) and may have kept the coil sets with the covers. I'll have to check that. That being said, my coil mounts are a little different in that one has a wire loom mount attached to it so I will be able to tell them apart. All the same I would still like to know the answer.

I checked my stock ls1's coil harnesses, and both sides are wired as you described. What was different was that the engine harness has a white stripe on each coil control wire, e.g. the ones that are not pink and black.

From what i recall.. bank one has solid color and bank 2 has the same colors but with white stripped control signal wires coming from the ECU.

I think i have swapped complete wired banks of coils and it still worked. This was when i had a problem dtc code i was chasing.

This makes sense, so the wires connectors that mate with the coil harnesses take into account that the actual coil harness can be swapped left to right.

What gives the above statement more credence is the fact that AC Delco only sells one ignition harness, instead of an odd/even side harness:

I am fairly certain that I have it right, but I need a sanity check to make sure I am not overlooking something stupid...

I just want to get a solid confirmation before I spend another 3 hours making the odd side coil harness. I already have more money than I care to admit in mil spec wire and Deutch connectors...

The coil harnesses are the same side to side. As mentioned, it's the engine harness that is different.

So then I am right that in the coil harness the same color wires would go to different cylinders depending on which side they are?

Purple = #8 and #1
Light Blue = #6 and #3
Green = #4 and #5
Red = #2 and #7

Does anyone else have an opinion on this?

I dont have a harness in front of me to look at at the moment to check colors, but your are correct on the numbers. 1-8 3-6 5-4 and 2-7. I think you're over thinking this. I know for a fact that the coil harnesses are not right left specific. Curious though, since you're building a harness from scratch, why didnt you just wire the coils direct and eliminate the plug?

Honestly, I never thought about not having a plug there...LOL

Although, having a plug does make it easier to work on, maybe...

In any case, I did replace the metripack connector with a Deutch connector, in a discreet location under the manifold.
