Default 82 Jaguar XLS

Hey guys, I have started a new project. This time it will be a simple swap, no turbo, just a good cruiser. The Car in question is a 1982 Jaguar XJS V12, 63,000 Californian miles on her. The V12 dropped a valve, so I picked her up nice and cheap! Car is very clean, as in NO rust, paint is peeling, tire are dryrotted, but none the less, she will make a good cruiser!

My plan is just to do a simple 5.3/4.8 swap, and the only performance addition will be something like an ls6 cam.

My last project, the 4.8L Probe, ran 12.80's with just a 4.8 and ls6 cam, which is faster than this 4000lb beast will ever need to go.

The mechanicals of the car started as a 5.3 v12, with a TH400, that is how they came from the factory. Only problem with the trans is that it's been specifically made for the Jag engine, so you can't use it behind an LS without an adapter plate. I plan to use a regular TH400, since the car came with 2.88 rear gears.

I'll post up progress pictures, which will be slow for sure, but should make for a nice cruiser when all said and done!

Starter Pics. This is how it looks before starting work on it. Lots of work left just to get the engine out. Good news is I should be able to sell most of the parts off the car to offset what I paid for it.

Not the best pictures, but the interior is in pretty good shape. Passenger seat needs about 4" restitched and the headliner needs reattached, but those are Minor issues.

Ha ha, I think someone already has a LS Jaguar called something like that! This will be the mildly pissy kitty!

Well, I haven't worked on the car any, but I have been doing some research on what engine I want to use. I think I have decided the best way to go is a LY2 4.8L. It's a gen IV, but doesn't have AFM, nor VVT, so no collapsible lifters, no cam phasers, just a cam sprocket swap away from an LS9 cam. The gen IV truck engines also come with the best stock intake manifold, most know it as the TBSS intake, and it also happens to be a couple inches shorter, hopefully enough so that I can fit it under the stock Jag hood! And they are actually reasonably priced!

I also did some looking at the tail shafts of the two different th400's, and I think I might be able to replace the rear housing section to allow the Chevy one to bolt right up to the driveshaft. That will help....

So that's it for now, hopefully in the next few days i can get out there and get the engine and tranny pulled and get them sold.

Just to clarify, none of the 4.8L have VVT or AFM.

Yes I know that, I was referring to Gen IV engines when I said that, because a lot of people don't want to go to to Gen IV because of having to deal with those issues, if that's what you want to call them.

Should be plenty of room to work with once the V12 is out! Sub'd

I'm getting pretty close to finishing a similar project putting a LT1 into a 1991 XJS. To give you an idea how long I've been working on it, the LT1 was still a popular swap when I started.

Once I get it running and driving and get the bugs worked out, I plan to put some kind of LS engine into.

If yours was sitting as long as mine was before you got it, you may be facing a lot of work in the brake system. I replaced front calipers and master cylinder, and then found the rear calipers were seized, which meant that the entire IRS had to come out and be disassembled to replace them.

I am using the mounts from Jaguar Specialties for the engine and the 4L60E trans. You should be able to use the trans mount, but I think you will need to fabricate your own engine mounts.

Yeah, I'm assuming the brakes will need work. I don't plan on having a ton of time into this. I will fab my own motor mounts, and I'm hoping I can leave the engine back far enough to mate to the th400 in the stock location, but I will have to see how tight it is with it back that far. It looks like with the 4L60E transmissions, the motor ends up forward a good 4" from the stock bellhousing plane.

Well, engine is out, that's a milestone! Next step will be doing some parts swapping around to see if I can mate the Chevy th400 tranny to the jags tail housing. The jag's tranny doesn't use a slip yoke off the tail end, it's a 4 bolt flange. So hopefully it's a straight swap, to make things easy. Here are some photos:

So this happened today:

For once I actually followed through with what I planned to buy! All Accessories included, wiring harness and ECU. For it to fit, I will need to relocate the alternator down some, and hopefully shaving the intake allows it to clear the hood.

I will be working on the transmission someone this weekend to figure out fitment to both the engine, and driveshaft.

Worked on getting the tail housing off of the transmission, and good news, as it appears to be a stock Chevy tail housing. So the flange will mount right on, as long as the end of the output shaft is tapped. If not, I will have to swap output shafts. So far it has been looking real promising!

Well I did some cleaning of the engine bay on Saturday, degreased some of it, still needs a lot of cleaning, but for now I just wanted it bare to make some measurements. Looks like I have right about 25" of clearance from the steering rack to the hood, and a total of 48" from the Firewall to the front of the radiator support.

I did some research, and it looks like I should be real close to clearing the hood with the stock Gen IV intake manifold. I will post up a couple more pictures when I get a chance.

So do you plan to use a 4L60E or a TH400?

You can probably just as easily use a slip yoke in the new TH400 and not worry about adapting the Jag tailshaft housing.

The slip yoke on the Jag is on the rear end, so the front has to be flanged. Sorry if I didn't specify that earlier. I'm trying to do the least amount of extra work I can. And I think I'm on a pretty good track with where I'm heading.

Engine will be delivered tomorrow!!
