Default LS1 or 5.3 RX7

So I'm in a bit of a dilemma, I am putting together a road racing FC RX7 and am trying to decide which motor to put in this thing. I have an LS1 and T56 out of a 98 camaro that I parted out. The car had about 198k miles on it and looked like someone beat the **** out of it prior to my acquiring it. The motor will most likely need a bottom end rebuild since I have no clue what the previous owner did to this car. If I go LS1 I was going to put in a GM ASA cam and I've already got a melling oil pump

My friend has a 5.3 that we swapped an LS6 cam and valve Springs into. The motor only has 100k miles on it. I can get it from him for about $600. If I got his if put on some new head gaskets and put the melling pump in. Probably still put in that ASA cam too and just sell his LS6 cam.

I know the LS1 is lighter and I believe the FC RX7 has 50/50 weight distribution with the aluminum block. I just see the ls1 getting expensive to rebuild and the impatient part of me wants to stab the 5.3 in and get this thing into the track.

What's the best long term choice. I plan on doing hpde and trying to get into endurance racing with the car eventually.

Buy the 5.3 and use it for now and take time to build the 5.7
I would buy an Improved Racing oil pan baffle to help with oil starvation in corners since you are planning on road racing.

I agree with Sube; these projects always take longer than anticipated and you won't want to cut corners with the LS1 build. Will the RX7 be fully stripped?

This was kind of my thought. And I can always sell it off later . Good tip on the oil pan baffle!!

I agree. I've done 2 LS swaps. Latest one being a big turbo 5.3 . I'm really good at the wiring and such, biggest pain in the *** on this one will be getting a roll cage and seat installed. We just did a 24 Hours of lemons race and that build really was smooth until the roll cage install!!

I can't add much to the discussion, but I have built 2 LS FCs and I have a 5.3L now with an ASA cam...LOL

I like the idea of running the 5.3L now and taking your time to build the LS1...

How do you like the ASA cam and where did you get it from?

If you are going to use that t56 you might want to budget for a rebuild of that as well.

What intake is on the 5.3?

I take it you will mix and match accessories? I would imagine the LS1 set up will be much more compatible with the RX7. Not sure if that is an issue for you.

I've gone back and forth on rebuilding that t56, but I am pretty sure that after listening to everyone I will do it. Thats one reason this project has been slower than my last build. I was in a big hurry last time and made some mistakes and I want to get this one right.

I like the ASA cam a lot, but I can see where tuning might be a challenge. I have a Holley Dominator so I can make tuning changes easily, but with OEM electronics you would need a good tuner.

I have a really good tuner about 30 min away from me so I should be good. Going to run EFI still, I tuned my turbo setup myself with HP tuners, but it was never 100% great.
