Default LS3 525 Cobra kit car

And so it begins! Last week I got my LS 3 376/525 Connect & Cruise T-56 package! This is going in a Classic Roadsters Cobra Kit car I have had for about 10 years! It’s replacing a SBC 388 and 700R-4. This is my first LS motor so I’ll be asking a lot of dumb questions!

With the LS motor and T-56 it should tip the scales at under 2400 pounds with my fat butt in it! It has a Ford 8.8” rear-end with 4.11 gears and 28” tall tires, M/T DR 295/55/15. It’s a street toy with a trip now and again to the ¼ mile. I already have a 125 hp fogger setup, remote bottle opener, dash mount NOS and fuel pressure gauges with warning lights, so what the heck! It’s NOT going to be a show car and I only want to impress/scare myself! Retiring and moving to Florida in the near future and plan to do a lot of cruising and day trips!

First couple of dumb questions;

Cam change, what?

Planning 1 7/8” to 2” to 3 ½” collectors to 3” ID side pipe mufflers. Thoughts?

Any suggestions on a surge tank for the cooling system, steam line to where?

Using the stock fuel rails? Putting a sump in the tank, planning a loop near the tank with pump a T to the fuel rail using -8 lines, regulator and return to tank. Regulator to fuel rail about 5-6 feet. ??

I already have lines and oil cooler, adapter at the oil filter like the SBC?

Thanks,

Al

Cool project. I wish I was able to fit in one better. I've wanted a cobra replica my whole life. Rented one but had a terrible time with the narrow foot well with the pedals. I sort of went home and cried.

Factory Five Racing makes one with more leg room, I believe.

Why are you mounting the regulator five feet away from the rails? Why not mount the regulator on/near the rails? Or at least on the firewall as close to the rails as you can?

If you are thinking of a cam change than why are you buying the 525 HP version of the LS3? The only real difference between the different HP crate motors is the cam, so wouldn't you save a few bucks buying the cheaper one?

Having said that I'm reasonably certain the 525 motor will scare the bejezus out of you in such a light and short wheelbase car. Plus will be a perfect cruiser.

Steam line, plenty of options written up on here. I tapped a fitting into the waterpump for a cleaner look. If you are careful when you fill the coolant you can plug the steam lines. People get mad at that but lots of threads arguing it, no sense arguing it again.

Sounds like an awesome project. I wouldnt worry about changing the cam if your getting the 525 hp ls3. The asa cam that comes in those should perform and sound great.

Glad to see you made it to this forum! Lots of great info and good people on here!

My Cobra comes in at about 2100 pounds with 3.70 rear gears and 26.5" rear tires.

Re your fuel setup, that's what I've had in my boot for the past 9 years, works just fine (I've got a 044 pump, Mallory regulator).

Regards

Jim
