Porsche 911 - LS1 swap

Porsche 911 - LS1 swap
I'll be bringing another Porsche to the dark side.
Recently picked up a good running and driving '99 911 with the sole intention of LS swapping it. Although I am not particularly low on funds, my goal is to build this car on a shoestring budget because I'm a cheap-***.
The 911 that I got already has a few upgrades done to it (Bilstein struts, Eibach springs, aero kit, 20" wheels, etc), and seems to run and drive pretty good. The trans has a slight grind in second gear that I noticed after I bought the car, so a trans rebuild MAY be needed in the future.....I will hold off on that for now.
I got the car for a pretty good deal, so I went ahead and picked up a LS1 engine out of a '99 Camaro SS (thanks Hawks Performance in Easley, SC!! Great guys).
I believe I have the Porsche engine sold, so once that deal is finalized I will be using those funds to purchase the Renegade Hybrid kit. I have a questions for you guys who have done this swap with and without the RH parts - what are the pros and cons to using their Power Steering and Water Pump kits??
Updates to come soon. In the meantime, here are some pics of when I first got the car, when I picked up the engine, and my cramped shop that needs some reorganizing!

the only con i had with my build was the transaxle gearing, i'm used to the vette 1800rpm @ 80mph cruise rpm. With the porsche it was closer to 3k! The gears are real close together as well, the gearing is really for a high revving motor not a torquey down low v8. Only choice is to get some tall goofy looking tires or re-gear the transaxle for $10k+!!

Ok, so I got my shop rearranged and the VW Camper Bus is completed and out of the way.
Wanted to put the Porsche on my lift, but I needed to make some step ramps since the car is lowered.....this wasted half a day having to run to the hardware store, dig out my wood saws, and building the ramps.
BUT, the car is on the lift now! Engine removal starts this evening.

Got the engine and trans removed yesterday. Just seeing the empty engine bay gets me excited! I'll be giving RH a call tomorrow or Friday to order the swap kit.
On a side note - I have to be in Las Vegas in later this month for work, so I scheduled a shop tour at Renegade Hybrids. Really looking forward to this, and hopefully they'll have a completed 996 that I can MAYBE take a ride in?!?

Yeah, mine was not a strength issue it was more of a correct gearing/rpm issue. 85mph @3000+rpm in 6th gear for me was no bueno. A re-gear which calls for a rebuild is in the $10k neighborhood.....i'm not a real porsche owner with that kind of money! lol.

Do you still have the car?

storm trooper.. its really not so bad. mine is very powerful in 6th. I could probably drive the car like an automatic in 6th gear the whole time. I drove the 996 more than most owners. The 3.4l engine you would have to drop from 6th to 5th just to pass someone on a level road. Now it has plenty of passing power in 6th gear.
How does it compare to say an 04 vette Z06..? I know both cars rev to 7000. GT3 revs to 8000. .. I mean if you really want the grey pupon you could get a regear but this thing really is fun.

RH kit has been ordered. I also went with their manual water pump and accessory drive setup.........we'll see how it goes.
Super pumped about getting the parts in....the waiting game is killing me.
I'm equally as pumped about my visit to Renegade Hybrids in two weeks while I'm out in Vegas. I've been dealing with Travis at RH, and he's been really nice so far. Of course, that may be because I just gave them about $5500....lol.....but I always give people the benefit of the doubt.

manual water pump setup. They didn't offer that when I bought my kit, just electric water pump. Steve actually went on about the guys who cut out all of the material and run a LS3 water pump. I think if it was a problem it would have shown up already. There are enough of these things out there now.
Also if you have a new renegade kit that is somehow different. Please post pics.

Oh, the wait is killing me!! Still haven't received the RH kit yet - every day is like a Christmas Eve that never ends. haha
On another note, I was in Las Vegas with some friends last week and was able to check out the Renegade Hybrids shop. Travis, the shop manager, was super nice and let me peek and prod at everything my heart desired......including a completed LS Cayman, an in-progress LS 996 Turbo, LS Lotus Esprit, and a bunch of other awesome cars. (Travis, if you are reading this, thanks again!!)
I did manage to get my speed-fix while in Vegas.....my friends and I rented (2) Ferrari 458's and (2) Lamborghini Huracans for the weekend. That was the best and worst thing I could have ever done! My next car will be a 458...it was amazing.
