Default Exhaust Note

I am in the planning stages of an LS swap in my '65 Buick Riviera.
https://ls1tech.com/forums/conversio...-ls1-swap.html

I was behind a hopped up G8 this evening, and the sound of it was, to my ears, frankly horrible. I have noticed other late model V8s that sound like this. Harsh, raspy, more like an import tuner than the American V8s I grew up with that had carburetors. Is this just a fact of life with modified EFI engines, or is it something that has to do with cam/exhaust choice? Can the sound of a big lopey cam, or that low mellow tone of the old Turbo mufflers, be had with an LS?

Most of the late model cars sound obnoxious due to the mufflers being right at the back of the car with no tail pipes, instead of under the car with tailpipes after like most early cars were..... We have done LS swaps at work on many early cars and they sound really good.....

Good to know. I will have a full exhaust system. My friend recommended 40 series Flowmasters. What would you recommend? It's a custom cruiser, not a hot rod, I don't want it too loud.

P.S. Cool Comet. My little brother's buddy in high school had a Maverick Grabber.

Do not use Flowmasters. Not only will it sound like crap, they flow like crap. Use a straight-through design like a Magnaflow or Borla.

It's definitely possible to get older school sounds with the LS. Just depends on mufflers and muffler location.

Flowmaster single chambers sound insanely good with LS engines. The crossflow Flowmasters don't flow well, the regular chambered mufflers are fine, maybe not as free flowing as a straight through but not losing much.

I'm picky about straight through muffler tones but they can sound good too.

I have Thrush Welded mufflers on my 5.3 truck, they're kinda like a Flowmaster clone.

On my car I use Flowtech Terminators which have a fairly unique sound to them in person. Nothing really sounds just like them and I like that. The video doesn't capture any of the low end so it's not really an ideal taste of the sound.

Older video with a different camera which sounds closer to real:

Here's my 64 A-body (Chevelle) with a 2.5" magnaflow dual setup with long tubes. I'm running a TSP Torquer V2.

It's a 90 degree pushrod V8. Put similar exhaust on it to what you put on your previous carbed hotrods, and it's gonna sound similar. If that's what you like, almost any of the aftermarket mufflers will give it to you, although I'd stay away from Corsa or Borla if you don't like the higher-pitched Euro/tuner sound. You may want to forego a crossover (h-pipe or x-pipe)....those make today's cars sound a bit more metallic/raspy/"euro". I grew up in the 60's/70's when virtually none of the muscle cars had crossovers.....very different sound which it sounds like you like. Larger diameter piping seems to also highlight the lower frequencies.

Guess we all like what we like -- I LOVE the higher pitched frequencies. And anything to keep it quieter.....I used a crossover and OEM '14 Coyote mufflers.

I'm running 2.5" Magnaflows with an X-pipe. 215/231 .644/.644 Lingenfelter cam. Frankly, I'm not that crazy about how my car sounds. I liked the Pontiac 400 with Super 44s WAY better. But, a small price to pay for driveable 600RWHP.

This video gives you a decent sample of everything. Low RPM, burnout RPM, and full throttle. Granted, the full throttle is intertwined with the other car I'm racing. I'm the one shifting gears in a proper manual gearbox (Top Gear BBC reference).

I think I have found a winner. I'll get some single chambers, no x pipe, and put them as close to the engine as possible, with tailpipes. Would 2.5 or 3" be better? This will be a stock 2007 Vette engine, with the exception of a healthy cam(cam selection will be another subject).

P.S. I think that car looked great on the aluminum slots. I have several sets up in the attic.
