Default DBC to DBW? Drive by cable to Drive by wire conversion.

I am doing a 5.3L twin turbo swap. For my application, it would be easier to do DBW than DBC. I just don't see how I can make cruise control work with DBC. What all do I need to make DBW work? I currently have an LS6 intake that has a DBC throttle body.

If you're only making the change to accommodate cruise control, there may be easier solutions. Over the decades I've swapped/added/converted a BUNCH of Japanese/German cars to after market electronic cruise units that use the vehicle's factory cruise control switch. So it looks stock -- but actually functions much better than any factory vacuum-operated set up. If you want more detail I'll provide it. I just had to go the OTHER way with mine - the move to DBW caused me to have to remove my cable operated cruise unit and replace it with something from Dakota Digital.

Retaining the stock buttons on the steering wheel is a must for me. Mounting a cruise control module will be a challenge given my space restraints. Which is one of the reasons I was considering DBW. I am going to have to switch the pedal no matter what, so I am completely open to options. The M5 pedal is BMW DBW.

The Rostra Universal cruise unit for cable is one I've used multiple times. It's programmable with dip switches and allows you to pick whether you have a normally open or normally closed control switch set up -- so you could keep your buttons.

Do you want to use the cruise control function from GM to control things or aftermarket? I think you're going to need a DBW ECU (others here can tell you from what) and probably an additional module to manage cruise, and likely the GM gas pedal. And of course the TB. I went with an 08 Corvette ECU on a crate LS3. Dakota Digital makes a cruise unit that plugs into the pedal and works beautifully on mine. But you'll have to explore whether or not you can use your steering wheel control.....that may be a deal breaker to make this all work for you.

From past research, I believe the Blue/Green 12586243 PCM can run DBW with cruise control.

Worth looking into.

I would think that could be corrected with a reversing relay, if necessary. No?

If I understand what I'm reading in this thread on Bimmerforums, it appears the E39 steering wheel buttons are CAN.

But one of the brainiacs over there like Thaniel could probably whip up a CAN to analog Arduino solution.

Everything here is just shouting go with an aftermarket system. There are various control button options for those, from stalks to flat panel type switches.

Either that or an aftermarket ecu that will give the flexibility to use an array of different parts

But yes, sorting each of the problems individually is possibly the cheapest option, but perhaps most time consuming.

Agreed, I think finding an aftermarket solution for DBC and using an aftermarket control unit would be the most logical selection. Finding a non obtrusive control device is crucial. Something small that could blend in to the dash.

Dakota and I'm sure others offer simple control buttons like this.

You'd hardly get more discrete than that ? Or an add on stalk ?
