Help stuck axle in a Ford 9"
Help stuck axle in a Ford 9" I'm trying to pull the axles out of my Ford 9" to swap the center section. The passenger side slid right out like they're supposed to but the drivers side will not come out. All the nuts are off the plates and using a slide hammer on it I've only been able to get the race a 1/8" out of the housing. A portion of the race broke off and I can tap the race with a hammer and chisel so it isn't froze up. I've also heated up the housing to no avail. I'm at a lose as I've literally beat on it with a slide hammer for four hours. Yes of course the rear end is under the car. Any suggestions on a very stubborn axle situation would be much appreciated. Thanks
it might not be the outer bearing at all.
it might be hanging up on the splines in the carrier. if the splines are twisted badly this happens. all you can do is get something long enough to bash it out from the other side.

Problem is it has a open diff in it now and the pin the spider gears run on won't let something go through the center. I'm thinking tomorrow the torch and welder will get a little workout as I fab up something heavy enough I can beat on. The passenger side axle did appear to have some twist in the splines. Hard to imagine as this thing was weak before. What's the ol saying, ***, bleed, or blister I'm getting this bitch off one way or another.
Get a piece of chain about 3 feet long, put chain over a couple of the studs, securing with some lug nuts, and pull away. I use a large slide hammer I welded a bolt to one of the unused attachments to go through the chain...
I got it out not without a fight. I ended up fabbing up a flange,pipe, and channel across the end so I could beat it out with a 12lb sledge. Splines were badly twisted and one broken. Housing is out so I can have it checked for straightness.
