Default Power steering cooler necessary?

I’ve had my conversion running for a little while but have not put a lot of miles it. It’s got plenty of idle time and now some street time. After a bit of driving the power steering pump starts whining and overflowing out of the cap which results in a little smoke. I’m curious if anyone has had to plumb in a cooler on their swap.

My swap is a stock truck 6.0 that feeds an 05 Crown Vic steering rack. Both were used with unknown miles, pump is a hydro boost pump with the top return block. So, pump?...rack?...cooler? Suggestions?

Brand new Gen II pump on mine with a 2.0gpm flow reducer in the outlet powering a ZF/Volvo rack. No noise, overflow, excessive fluid heat, etc. -- just quietly boosts the steering.

If you are returning fluid thru the top fitting near the filler, your fluid is getting aerated. Use the other return fitting.

Fluid returns using the bottom fitting.

Are you using standard power steering fluid? I'm in Arizona and mine would do the same thing in the summer time. I solved my issue by simply replacing the fluid with royal purple synthetic fluid. It has a much higher heat rating.

Yes, standard power steering fluid. I’ll try that fluid first, if that doesn’t help I’ll try a new pump because it’s the next easiest thing to change.

Ive ls swapped alot of diff platforms and never use an original cooler. Its easier for most swaps to hook it up directly to the gear box without it. Never had an issue. Return does go to the bottom port. Top port is for a hydroboost setup. U can cap it off.

Depends on the application. If its a daily driver with vacuum brakes and in a location with mild summer temps I wouldn't bother. However, I've used some fairly large P/S coolers (same size or bigger than some trans coolers) in a TJ Wrangler on 33's, a Grand Wagoneer on 33's and a K30 Pickup with hydroboost on 35's. These trucks see heavy offroad use and lots of driving with the tires aired down, thus putting even more stress and heat into the steering components. I've also used a P/S cooler in an LS swapped E36 drift car. That car has wide tires, sees lots of fast steering action and high RPMs.
