Any LS starter should work.

As said above all LS starters will work. Just make sure you get the later model type with the thicker mounting flanges. You need the correct length bolts also.

I like the 5 gen Camaro starters. They have a plug for the solenoid wire, an optional heat shield, and are relatively cheap (about $110).

Ok I'm thinking i need to get somewhat small one as the header flange is right next to where the starter will mount any recommendations for one?

They are all pretty small. Look up the 5th gen Camaro starter. The heat shield is nice. It is cheap from the dealer .

I used an aftermarket starter that was clockable. I clocked mine very tight to the block (crate LS3) to move it as far away from the exhaust manifold as possible AND used a heat-shield/blanket on the starter -- it's not a problem. Just a note of caution - IIRC, the crank position sensor/plug is in close proximity to the starter/block interface. Be sure you can reach it/plug it in before you finalize your starter selection/location.

So i bought a camaro starter and it doesn't bolt up tight to the block here are some pics that show the 1/8" gap.

That's odd. What year Camaro? The one I got bolted right up to my Gen 4 aluminum 5.3L.

It won’t pull up flush because, why? Is the solenoid hitting the block further up?

so this starter sits this far away from the bell housing

it looks like the starter part that goes into the bell housing is up tight inside the bell housing which does not let the starter pull up flush with the engine block

looking inside the bell housing it looks like the starter gear is just off from the flywheel like it should be

Has anyone run into this? Do i need to return it? others have said any starter will work i just won't be able to find out for a couple months yet

With the Fbody bellhousing you will have interference with some starters..... GTO won't work.... looks like that Camaro unit won't either.

I like to run the truck starters which have 2 long bolts.... unlike the '98-02 Camaro ones which have a short and long bolt.... plus the Camaro starter case can break off the short ear.... which happened to me before.

As Mark said, with the f-body bellhousing slight clearancing is needed. I had to do it in mine. It literally took 2 minutes with a small Dremel tool and a 80 grit flapper wheel.
