In my 68 C10 swap I have a "built" LS6. Diamond pistons, AFR heads, small 220 cam and it did 380 hp at the rear wheels with a very conservative 91 octane tune. I know not big numbers but it has done over 20 miles per gallon and its not slow. T56 magnum trans. 4:10 gears running on 20" wheels. The 4:10's are just about perfect. With an auto 20" tires and 4:10's in my opinion would be a great combo. Get a good converter like Circle or Yank at about 3200 stall it will not be sluggish.

As far as brakes I'm running C5 Corvette all around. Booster and master. They work great. "Captain Fab" makes some great booster brackets.

Good luck with your project.

I'm a "cheap ***", (not quiet Denmah territory) but yeah, that kinda' money should build you all the power you need.

Ok thank you for all the information everyone has given. I ended up finding a LS2 that came out of a 2005 Corvette with 32k miles on it. It was a friend of a friends car that was hit in the rear and totaled out. I got the complete pullout for $2500 so I jumped on it. So now that I have the motor part picked out I need to decide on heads/cam/intake. Since the goals for this truck wont be going 140mph but more low end/mid range power. I'm thinking about sending the 243s off to TEA for stage 1 or 2, ls6 intake and small cam like Tick performance Tick Performance SNS torqueMAX Stage 1. Any other suggestions for a $2000 budget?

With any kind of bigger cam you will need better valve springs and push rods. The LS2 intake is not the best performer but would I trade it out for a LS6?, I'd drive first to see how you like it. Same thing with the heads. Put the cam in, get a good tune and see how you like it.
Spend some of the intake or head money on a good torque converter and well built auto trans.
I think all the front Corvette accessories will work in a C10.
