I have not as I don't have a compression tester and even if 1 of the cylinders show poor compression, motor still comes out anyways.

It would be good to know before you pull it and take it apart. Easier to do now than when it is out.

I don't disagree but based on symptoms, it's coming apart regardless.

Conservative timing, I'd check the injectors even try to have them flowed. I've seen garbage in a friend's injector once, was a rust flake.

Injectors will be getting checked, even though they were brand new flowed and tested.

Hopefully I'll have a cause in the next day or 2.

Cylinders 5 & 7 broken pistons. Was also some debris on the oil pickup screen.

Digging more tomorrow, hopefully don't find anything else.

Ouch... Sorry to hear Bruce. Did you gap the rings, or did you run it as is?

I purchased motor & transmission from someone that refurbs them for these purposes. I'm in communication with him about this but I think overall I'm going to be up schitt's creek without a paddle with these issues.

I have someone else tearing down the motor as I'm now out of town with work but I still want things moving forward.

Updates to come

If the cylinder bores and crank still look good, I'd look at the Summit rod and piston kits. Also, Texas Speed has a pre-balanced rod/piston combo.

Andrew what do you think could have caused this?

The guy tearing it down doesn't think it was detonation as the tops of the pistons and plugs show no sign of it. A few other guys I've shared the photos with lean towards detonation based off of the damage.

I can't lie, it's out of the realm of my experience, so I'm definitely open to others opinions.

Since it's out of my experience, it's part of the reason I went with someone else to provide a motor/trans combo... even that doesn't seem to matter for me unfortunately.

Generally I've seen folks say that was caused by detonation.

Motors torn down and findings..

"Rod bearings look good & same with the rod throws on the crank.

The crank bearings are done and so are the surfaces on the crank.

So you need 2 pistons and your choice of a different crank or get this one ground. I would rebearing the whole engine and I would strongly consider replacing all the pistons."

Was the information given to me today. I have access to a spare parts motor that I'm likely going to get the motor back together so my cost and downtime is limited. Plan for something different over winter likely.

Bruce, that sounds like a solid plan given you are at a reasonable boost number. While it's apart though, have the guy gap your rings. When I built my motor, I got new Mahle file fit rings and gapped to .024/.026 per the instructions for mild boost. I was running around 10-12 psi.

That's the game plan for the time being. I just want it back together and ready when I get back from work - timing should hopefully work out!

So did it go lean or something?

From the people I've spoke with and shared pictures with, most lean (no pin intended) towards detonation. I don't know the cause of the detonation if that's truly what it was as the car is tuned conservatively. Can't pull the log file as terminator doesn't auto log and I definitely wasn't logging drives.

Bad gas? Possible I guess. Whatever it was, I hope it's behind me now.

Sorry to hear about the motor woes. It sounds like you have a solid plan in place to get back up and running to save on downtime and money. If/when you start thinking of a different route over the winter check out our Pro LS line. We've had some great feedback on our rotating components and assemblies. The Pro LS line of camshafts has been a hit since we launched them in July of 2018.

@Summitracing thanks for the suggestion. The motor already has your stage 2 cam. I'm hoping I don't have any issues moving forward (fingers crossed) this set up should satisfy my power goals for a while yet.

Have about 40kms(25 miles) on it now, going to change the oil tomorrow and then get some more driving in. Everything seems to be good again.. Fingers crossed.
