I am suggesting we move it to the conversions/hybrid area as I think it would be of help in that area to anyone considering a swap into a FWD platform.
I wasn't sure what forum it belonged in and I didn't see this one, so I went for the more general one. Thanks for directing me to this unusual place.

If the GTO is FWD, then you're right! Go change your back 2 plugs!

Seriously, the only time this has been done "b4" is in a GM prototpe. The GTO is an Australian Monaro that was designed for the LS1 RWD years ago. The GTP sure ain't Australian, and it sure ain't RWD!

I think his point was they look like the same car.

But best of luck on this though, take lots of pictures for us.

Don't get me wrong. My tone was intended to be good-natured banter. Sorry if it came across otherwise.

But he's right about the looks, the GP community thought that the GTO was what the '04 GP should have looked like. From the front at least! Pontiac builds excitement. We build exciting Pontiacs (oh, and Chevys and trucks, and ...).

Don't worry, I'll have pictures, like a Dad with a newborn (boring)!

Wow, that is a very interesting project. I am very curious as to how it goes for you. Keep us updated!
When do you plan on having it finished?

Well the first phase, swap the current 3800 into the other GTP, should be underway this week. That will take about a week, maybe a little less. Then a short break to clear away other jobs and it starts. September, then October to do it, then tuning and the final touches. We're hoping for December 1st to have it on the road. But you know how these things are, 2 steps forward and sometimes 1 step back! We'll see.

BTW, did I mention this will be my 1 and only daily driver, A/C and all.

I have a source on most of the original GM parts used in the LS1 impala. Would probably make the conversion much easier.

If you are interested shoot me an email.

consider the front sump pan like on the GTO's. then you can mount your starter undernieth. I wish knew about that pan when I was doing mine. your axle is going to go right where the ls1 starter is. mine is basicly a FWD car with the trans in the back.

December Update

For all of you who are interested, the engine is complete. The trans took an extra month due to waiting on parts, but it's complete with 3.29 gears and 3200-3500 stall converter. Sorry for the lack of pictures, but all there was to see was parts and boxes up to now! The builder has the original Impala FWD setup bought as scrap from GM. He's mating my engine/trans as of now. The car should be running by 2nd week of January. I'll take a few pics of the cradle mockup in a week or 2.

San Antonio (TX) GP Club hosts a winter get together called the Alamo City Shootout. ACS III is January 28, 2005 in Alamo City. I'll be there. N/A for now. Want some 11's!!

BTW, the attachment is the '98 on the day we shipped to Japan.

Thats pretty cool man. I almost bought a GTP as a daily driver about six months ago. They're nifty little cars. Where in Dallas area you? I'm over in grapevine. I'd love to see this when she's done!!

Spanky, that RWD must have been a trip to build and it looks great. I picked FWD because I didn't have to do surgery on the body/chassis and I wanted a daily driver. That looks like an out and out racer!

Here's an update. We are mocking up the engine and trans on a cradle to iron out all the bugs before actually cutting up the car. We test fitted the GM salvage prototype LS1 FWD drive train to the cradle and C5 mounts look like a natural. The original GM version used Caddilac mounts. There's a shot of the oil pan/starter/custom flywheel mockup on a junk block and a shot of the GM drivetrain. There's also a shot of the poor forlorn GP waiting on the transplant. Look for completion the first or second week of January. We will be in San Antonio for the Alamo City Shootout III January 28th <he said with fingers crossed>!

Well, obviously you're right about FWD, but there aren't that many 3800 FWD Grand Prix's in the 10's. Maybe 2 or 3. There's a lot more in the very low 11's.

BTW, most of the FWD's in the 10's and lower are virtually all-out race machines. Mine's gonna be a full dress daily driver.
