Oops, we used the 285 TC bolt pattern and I ordered the 245 mm TC for the build. Couple of days delay. My God how they add up. My bad!

We had a glitch in the trans to block adaptor and the flywheel. The boltholes for the bell housing were a little off and we punched the flywheel for the stock 285mm TC. I, of course, bought the hi-po 245mm TC! Sheesh, what a maroon! So we had to redo the flywheel AND the adaptor. All just a few thousandths that added up! On top of that we found that the cradle we were going to use for the mock-up was damaged by the fork lift at the salvage yard. At least the yard was cool about it and said they would exchange it for a good one, but we still have to drive back over and pick up a replacement. So we lost a couple or three days, but are almost back on track. We're figuring out the exhaust plumbing now. C5 exhaust manifolds look like we have a good chance. The starter is a PITA, we have several NASCAR ones that are ALMOST right and have another possibility coming. Damn! How I do love hot roddin'!

BTW, this is standard for this kind of project! I'll keep you posted.

Thanks for the enthusiasm. Just for comparison the cammed, intercooled 3800 that was in my car ran a 13.509 @ 104.3 with a 2.19 60' the summer of 2003 (about 83° at the track), so hopefully this should give us some good numbers.

Talk to you later.

Default January Update

Shucks, looks like San Antonio is gonna be a no-show! Dayum! We've had some machine shop probs (wish I had the mag-drag where everyone wanted to help)! We've lost a couple of weeks looking for a good shop who can do small parts fast. I'm not complaining, just venting a little. But it's gonna happen soon. We have the cradle mocked up and are solving the little problems as fast as we can. Mounts are looking good and the cradle works as planned. No ricer excuses, just the facts, ma'am!

black_z, we've tried several modified flywheels and have come to the conclusion that it's going to take a custom-built one. We're working that out now (setting up a mill to make it). The cost of the machine work justified buying a machine instead of having it done. Just like the Texas Two-Step, two forward and one back. Once that last problem is resolved, we are about 2 weeks away from firing it up in the car. I'll keep you posted.

I understand that the next gen Impala and Monte Carlo introduced at NAIAS will have a 5.3 liter LS1 based engine in a FWD configuration. Maybe you can start trying to source some of their unique parts to help with the swap.

Unfortunately, The General made quite a few changes to the engine/trans. They are fairly small, but cause other problems for a swap. For instance, the starter is reversed and now mounts on the trans side on the upper part of the bellhousing. No real way to adapt to that. The block has been revised for the transaxle bolt pattern. Lots of little stuff like that. Wish it was like you said.

Default any more updates

Just woudering how this project is going. I have a 97 front drive 3.1 V6 M/C thst I am having engine problems with right now. I havent yet torn it down yet. Depending how bad it is I might park it till spring and go the 5.3 route. 5.3 motors are only around a grand for an iron block one. If GM releases the part numbers maybe I could use factory mounts and manifolds. Maybe I could use the trans and starter from the 3.1 and adapt the flywheel to work. Keep us posted how you make out. Maybe someone will come out with a kit for this swap?

I guess I should update this.

Control of parts being made had to be brought in to me being in that control. I purchased a engine lathe, and a CNC Mill. Its a large CNC mill with a Fanuc 0M controller.

I have MasterCam version 9 and autocad 2003 to try and learn how to design parts.

Some may know I purchased one of the GM concept powertrains that was developed for the Impala SS project John Moss was associated with. See this article for those details. http://www.gmhightechperformance.com...run/index.html

Here are the pics of the LS1/4T65eHD I purchased.
http://www.fastfieros.com/enginesava...nesforsale.htm

So, now it is time to punch out a new motor plate, but more important, billet a flywheel.

Thanks for updating the thread for the guys, Loyde. I've been having too much fun with my son (home on leave from Japan) to visit the forums lately.

Adapter Dimensions - solved (thanks Loyde at Fast Fieros)
Flexplate issue - solved (thanks Loyde, it looks super!)
Starter issues - solved (thanks Loyde)
Motor mount system - developed (thanks Loyde)
Exhaust system - developed (thanks Loyde)
Harmonic damper issue - solved (thanks Loyde)
LSD bomb - being corrected (thanks Eric at DynoTech)
Cooling - resolved (thanks ZZP)
Fueling - resolved (thanks Racetronics - 38 lb/hr injectors, stock FP, SLP 85 mm MAF, ported TB by Mark Shaner)
FWD axles - building (thanks Terry SFPH)

Notice the trans and engine are mated and on the cradle ready to go into the car. All major clearances are checked and it fits fine! I'm getting antsy!

Some things didnt fit very well. I had to wait on the LS4 release for some parts from it.

The harmonic damper I built was from the C5 vette. It just wouldnt clear the frame rail.

Then the cooling system needed some billet parts made for it.

The exhaust is done and headed to Jet Hot for coating.

I believe maybe June 15th is the new target date now for firing the engine finally.

Loyde
