Just curious if anyone has ever tried this. I know an SBF will fit... but the LS1 just seems like such a better choice for a swap.

From the size of the front end, it looks like it would be a pretty straight forward swap. I say go for it, everyone will just think its a stock piece of euro trash until you blow their doors off. Good Luck.

Sounds like a really cool swap, but you'll really need to upgrade the drivetrain from what the Griffins used because a stock LS1 will easily double the power output of a 289 Ford.Ground clearance for the exhaust system will probably be a problem to.I say go for it anything with 400hp and less than 2300lbs weight will be a beast.Heck you've already got me thinking about a LS1 Lotus Europa swap.

There's a 2500M with a 383 Chevy stroker which I suspect will be close. I am currently putting a SBF don't ask me why or trash the engine choice I'm only pointing you at a group that can help. My 2500M looks like the picture (Which I believe is 3050TM) mine is 3059TM. I suspect the Chevy conversion will be easier since since you can go with Sanderson Cast headers. Headers are the biggest issue since your dealing with about 3 1/4 between the head and then the frame rail. The other benifit the Chevy will have is the position of the distributor. The Ford sticks out in front which ends up being one more thing to watch with the hood clearance. Honestly I suspect the Chevy will be easier the Ford and you'll have it a ton easier getting parts to help you out. I am not sure about the tranny....Keep in mind things are little tight and what's in the way is the frame so it's not so easy just to cut and move things.
The rear - Most guys are using a 300zx rear or the Jaguar. The 300zx seems to be the most popular given cost and it bolts in. I am actuall going with a 8.8 from a 94 TBird. Again...I am not a Ford lover it's just what I had. The 8.8 is actually pretty good and I am going with 3.08 and a posi setup.
Weight -Not sure what year your cars is but my 74 weighs in a 1864lb. I am going a bit mild 300/325 hp with the a T5. Nothing fancy but it should be quick enough.
Good luck and shoot me a line if you have a question....or a good source for TVR parts....I'm alway looking....
