Default Buying a ls1! what to look for

Alright found a ls1 with 34,000 miles on it and had the guy do a leak down test on it for me. He said it was between 8-9% in all the cyl. and i was wondering if thats pretty good or what. Also what else should i look for or have him do. I'm planning on going up to see it also.
Thanks
Justin

yes that is very good! i think anything under 15% is considered good, but i cant remember if thats right or not. but you have nothing to worry about.

have him do a compression test and see what it is in all the cylinders.

alright yea i totaly forgot about the compression test untill after the weekend was over. Didn't really want to bug him again but i guess i might. I might just drive up there this week and watch him do it and check the engine out. but does 2700 sound about right for a engine with 34k on it.
Thanks

Ideall get a 2001+ since it has the LS6 intake manifold. It also has better rod bolts and a better oil pump. If you go with a manual transmission, the 2001+ comes with some upgraded internals (shift forks, blocker rings) and a much improved slave cylinder. There are some early 2001 engines with LS1 intakes, so you will need to check the numbers on the manifold. Ideally get it with all the accessories you need and as complete as possible so you don't have to nickel/dime later.

Also, before you install the engine, make sure it has both front and rear seals. My engine was missing the rear seal and it could've been a disaster had I installed it.

If you have good leakdown numbers then the compression test is irrelevant. If the compression test was run first then a leakdown test would verify that the compression was being held over time, but if you already have the leakdown results there's nothing more need be done.

Yeah, you are good to go man. Go buy the thing. Basically what he is saying is that if it doesn't just leak down right away, the compression has to be good. If you are happy with the price, I'd get it.

When you get a used engine like this is there anything i should replace on it since i have the engine out on a stand, or is it just drop on in.

The leakdown numbers are great given the engine was cold, assuming he didn't oil down the cylinders as I mentioned previously.

I didn't see what year the engine is, but if it's older than 2001 I'd swap the oil pump to the newer part. Timing chain also while you're in there just for good practice.

That's about it for priority upgrades, other things like cam and valvesprings are dependent on what your plans are.

Timing set and oil pump are 1000x easier to do when the engine is on a stand. Better to do it now while it's easy. Most sponsors sell LS6 oil pumps (that's what I'd recommend). For a timing set, so people like double roller chains. I have a Cloyes adjustable single roller.

I would NEVER just drop in a used engine without looking at the bearings and probably even pulling the heads

thanks a lot for the input, its a 2001 so it should have the ls6 pump, but i was thinking about putting a ported one in anyways. I'll look into the timing chain, heard the ls2 chain is pretty good for the price. I could look at the bearings and pull the heads but i dont know if they guy will let me just take them off since the bolts are torque to yeild and he would have to buy new ones if i didn't buy it.

Thanks a lot for the input, keep them coming.

considering it is a 01, and depending on the history I would be really tempted to just drop it in depending on your ideas of future mods or not. If it is a yard motor and has a warranty on it then what the hell I'd do it. Most yards if they sell it with a warranty won't intentionally sell you shady stuff. Just be a judge of the person. If he seems honest enough then you should be ok. If I was the guy, I wouldn't let you pull the heads or anything eithor. Gaskets and head bolts would run about $75, and what if you didn't want it for whatever reason? The leakdown is good, I say go for it. Chances of a bottom end problem with 34k on it? Eh remote, possible but remote. Bore problems are more common with these motors anyways. Any junkyard motor is a gamble, but you seem to have most of the bases covered.

thanks a lot, tim from EAD performance is selling it(he's a sponser), he bought 2 a 99 and the 01 and he's using the one that doesn't sell. He said he saw them both run and seem to run strong. I would think they would be fine since he is using the one that doesn't sell. Also this engine came out of a car that was rearended and has been sitting for only 4 months.

Well thanks a lot for all the input i'm calling him today to tell him that i'm going to buy it.
Thanks a lot
