That looks very odd. Usually the dowels are in the block, not the bell. What tranny is that?

I bought my motor and tranny separate and I had to remove the dowels from my bellhousing being I had both in the motor. I ended up lightly heating the bellhousing with a propane torch and locking a set of vice grips onto the dowel and just smacking the handles of the vice grips with a hammer until the dowel started to come loose. Then I just wiggled it out.

You should be able to just tap them out of the trans case since the holes are open to the back. The dowels are supposed to stay in the block but if thet are corroded pretty good they sometimes stick in the trans as yours did. I would probably use a little heat and stay away from a big ol' heavy hammer....you wouldn't want to break the case.

2wd 4l80e. Theres one dowel in the block itself with one empty hole. The tranny came off of another motor.

Correct but I do not want to bust off a piece of the bell housing. My initial instinct was curse the hell out of it and just bash that sum mo biatch out. Then I realized I kinda need that. I'll attack it with the propane torch with some tappage action tomorrow.

Thanks guys!

You may want to try soaking it overnight with some rust penetrant.

I heated the case and then smacked them out from the open end with a
punch.

I just got an 8" socket extension and bashed that sob out. It wont break off the case. The structure of the bellhousing gives it strength. Atleast enough to knock those dowels out. I highly doubt you will have to hit it hard enough to break the case.

Much easier then I thought it would be. I thought to bastards were tight as hell in there. I just put some penetrating lube on it before I went to run my mom a coffee. Came home put the propane torch on it for a few seconds, tapped it out.

Thanks guys,

-Matt
