Default voltage range on ls1 oil pressure sensor

Hi, I am swapping an LS1 engine into my 1987 Mazda RX-7 TII. I want to use the factory RX-7 oil pressure guage, but there is no easy way to install the RX-7 oil pressure sensor onto the LS1 block with the space I will be working with. I am going to design a circuit to map the resistance range of the stock LS1 sensor to the range that the RX-7 guage will be looking for. I'm just going build a circuit that uses an 8-bit digital potentiometer and creates a value between 0 and 255 for values detected from the LS1 sensor. Where can I find a few pressure to resistance values for the LS1 oil pressure sensor? I will just perform a linear interpolation for the in between values. I do not want to manually find the values by applying pressure to the sensor.

It may be in the Helms manual. I'm at work, maybe someone else can look it up?

OK, I spent 1/2 hour looking through the Helms service manual, if it's there I couldn't find it. Sorry! Good luck.

Bob,

I have a stock Mazda oil pressure sender in the little adapter by the oil filter. Works like a charm.

Did you have to drill and tap to install that?

Yes. I have an Autometer sender installed there on my car. Very easy to do.

Yes. Just drilled and tapped. The Mazda sender uses 1/8th NPT thread as I recall.

If that sender's resistance range is anywhere in the three '01 Firebird Helms manuals, I sure couldn't find it. I found the coolant temp sender, fuel level, sender, etc. but never the oil pressure sender.

you can run an adapter from autometer.
i have a few friends doing RX7 swaps now, and they tell me that all the resistances and operations are reverse of each other between the ls1 and the rx7 sensors.

the autometer adapters saved me.

if you dont mind, post up the resistance curve for the temp sensor.....

im basicly doing the same thing..

Has anyone figured out the voltage vs pressure reference for oil? I'm thinking of sending it through HP tuners cable.

It should be a 0-+5v range, I have not verified though.

If your using a 99+, the PCM doesn't really use the oil pressure input for anything other than a idiot gauge that doesn't really work anyway.. the input will not effect any performance. Won't stop the engine from starting up or running... how many thread there are for Zero oil pressure..!

I would just do away with the stock LSx OEM sender, use an adapter and plug in the RX7 (or your truck) or what ever car sender your swapping into .. I broke off the top of the LS1 sender, drilled and tapped the remaining lower part to 1/8" NPT thread and screwed in my Stock Chevelle idiot light sender.. I also have Autometer gauges with the sender in the plate above the oil filter.

You should reseach on the Oil Sender and the PCM... and options for mounting the sender.

Either way, using the RX7 or other sender, I would still need to know the voltage range vs pressure for what I am wanting to do. I want to run the sensor through one of the HP tuners EIO's and have it on screen. I'm puting a single board computer with a 8.4" TFT in my truck and trying to get rid of the guages completely.

Also, if the 99+ only used the oil sender as an idiot guage, your oil pressure guage wouldn't work period. It would act like the water temp guage that is like an idiot light. I was under the impression that the oil sender went to the BCM and straight to the guage not the ECM and that's why you can't pick it up on a scanner.

Either way, I need a voltage/pressure reference to set up the perameters in HP tuners.

Ok.. I get what your trying to setup..

Maybe you can setup the sender with an adjustable regulator off of your Air Compressor and measure the output of the sensor as you increase the air regulator pressure ?

bczee,

It's funny you mention that.. I was thinking I might have to do that. Do you know if the sensor takes a 5v in voltage?

I'm not sure of the Voltage, but most of the PCM in/out voltages are 5V's for sensors.. your going to have to ask the Subject Matter Experts to be sure..! Maybe give speartech a call..

I waiting to see what you come up with. should be interesting !

If you have HP tuner just hook the sensor into the harness, plug the compressed air to the other side and read the graph in real time on HPtuner.

Pop N Wood,

I still need to give the sensor a reference voltage or voltage in. I don't have that portion of the harness as it is normally part of the body control module, which I don't have in my 63 pick up. I only have the Engine Control module. So I need to know what the sensor needs as a V-in. The rest I can figure out by loging the V-out with HP tuners.
