Default LS1 idiot light

I have purchase a 2002 LS1 and will be installing it in a 68 Camaro. I was wondering if I could somehow incorporate the little check engine message screen on the instrument cluster into my car? Will it just be a hassle? Has anyone done it before? Thanks.

It's a slick idea, if I was going to do it I'd go for the 'Vette Driver Info Center though. Much more info. Need to add sensors for oil temp and whatnot, but it would be a nice package when working.

It would be really cool to have the Corvette driver info center. I'm pretty sure that the DIC is by the BCM (body control module). Depending on how much work it is to incorporate the Corvette BCM into your swap, it might be more hassle than it's worth. But it would be really cool to see.

On the topic- does anyone know exactly what is needed to make the CEL light work? I hooked up a 12V LED to it, but nothing happens.

Thanks

the screen or the lamp? for the screen to work, you need a VETTE harness/PCM program and a VETTE BCM in the car.
its a big hassle... its actually easier for me to write my own then it is to make the stocker work...

athough if i was going thru that effort, i would have the heads up display on there.. lol.

yes.. you need a light (regular lamp or LED... doesnt matter) with +12v going to it... the other end of the lamp goes to the PCM.. the PCM puts the light to GROUND to turn it on (not power).

Cool, but tons of work??

I also like the ability to look at all gauges (when I get a split second) to see how things are doing as opposed to waiting for the numbers to scroll.

oh yea... a good amount of work.

it took about 5 non-rushed, relaxed paced hours just to get that screen mounted in the cluster.

its a neat project... i started out using a PIC microcontroller in assembler but it started to grow out of hand(and my abilitys), so i had two options, use write it in C for the PIC, or do it really easy with a BasicStamp2..... so i got a basic stamp2.. lol

ODBII connection is accessed using a ELM microchip(do a google search), and the VFD has a serial controller on it so it only takes one pin from the BS2...

athough in this 1.0 version, im not even using the ODBII port yet... im getting the gauge data off the traces on the back of the cluster..

in addition to the display im making, im also replacing the factory tachs guts (horribly inaccurate) with the guts from a autometer tach.. and im making new gauge faces that match the LS1s oil pressure and coolent temp sensors... and the new faces have a more modern performance look then the stock gauges... kind of like a Pro-Comp gauge look during the day... and a blue number, red/orange needle look at night

not a easy project, but compared to the rest of the car, its a cheap project, and its nice and time consuming... gives me somthing to do to keep me sane when i cant work on the car.

What are you using to print up the gauge faces? I've been trying to find a screen printer who can handle dead-front inks, and they all give me the deer in the headlights look.

im having the same problem.
ive tried several methods... the best one envolves layering plastic sheets, but i still have a problem with that ghosted black background....
if you can find a source, please, let me know.. lol

right now im using the stock faces... i re-did the tach guts, but retained the factory aircore... its now reasonably accurate.... and it works with the low voltage, 4cyl LS1 "tach" output...

What did you have to do to mate the autometer internals to your tach? Sounds interesting. I wonder if I could somehow use my stock gauge faces with autometer internals.

I put the guts from an autometer speedo in behind my old face. But I did end up making a new background since the new speedo went to 120mph and my old one stopped at 85, plus the odometer and screw holes didn`t line up perfectly.

I would say that it would be a very slim chance that everything would line up perfectly especially for a speedo. But if you don`t mind making a new face that looks stock it isn`t too bad. My speedo needle even fit right onto the autometer guts.

The first two are my stock gauges. The third is the Classic Instruments set I may replace them with. The only problem is the turn signals, high beam and brake lights are all in the speedo and tach and wouldn't be with the Classic Instruments. Which is why I would be interested in doing the autometer guts swap.
