Default Sure an LS1 fits in a Miata

We all speculate about putting big engines in small cars. When it became apparent the Blown 454 might not fit, the LS1 was the next logical choice wasn't it? (see pix)

Let us know what type of exhaust you are able to fit on it. I imagine that will be the biggest challenge.

Did you have to perform any surgery on the framerails and/or firewall?

That should be a cool conversion.

Yes, I am with Lee on this one. I am in the process of making my new firewall. I pushed the engine 2" back from the stock firewall. I went alittle extreme with the weight distribution and trying to get it to fit right. After the firewall the header construction will be next. Oh what fun!!!! But I am getting there......slowly!!!!!

Enjoy!!!

I can't wait to hear it run and drive that thing!!!

Default Sweet Set-up

A great part of this kind of project's fun is all the questions to be answered!!
Turbotacoma is way ahead toward completion of his project and his tech help is greatly appreciated, Thanks Tim. Check out his website.

My radiator is a Ron Davis, the top is angled back just like a Corvettes.
It has two crossflow 1.5 inch tubes and 27 X 16 very close to stock Camaro/Firebird dimensions with two aluminum shrouded 12" SPAL fans.

I'm sure NOT a pioneer here, lots of guys are now doing LS V8s in Miatas and already driving them, but the greatest thing is everyone that's doing them are proud of their respective engineering ideas incorporated and are happy to share info. just like the old Hot Roddin' days it's GREAT!

My Ls V8 Miata project's ongoing progress photos will be posted ONLY at Howard Performances website (up soon) I am Not working with nor affiliated with Furgeson in any way.

I am still running the STOCK mazda radiator in the stock location! I did have to reverse the polarity of the STOCK mazda fans to turn them from pullers to pushers and had to move them to the front of the radiator. The car runs cool, I have the fan coming on at 190 and off at 180... The car almost seems to run to cool. OEM mazda temp sender is on engine, and oem gauge rarely gets 1/3 of the way up. Using a scan tool the gm temp sender never seems to be over 200. However on very hot days stuck in traffic, it has been as high as 220 once or twice...

I'm sure a few of these questions have been asked before but I really curious. What's the total weight gain of this swap? What type of brake/suspension upgrades are required? And how fast is this thing gonna be?

Great swap. I like how in the first pic you're actually measuring to see if it will fit - classic Hot Rodders disease! I'm sure the LS1 Miata will cure it.

Hey All:

All 4 of us have different radiator and fan configurations. I am running a 2 1/16" Miata race spec. Radiator with 2 1" cores. I moved thebottom of the radiator forward and was able to run the fans in the stock location. Both fans will come on at the same time. A total of 2500 cfm is what they will push. My hoses are stock camaro hose's. I just clocked one and has to trim it back. The other one I made a hard metal tube to get the curve I needed to get it to where I needed it. It's tight....but the weight is not as far forward as with the Ford conversions where the radiator is moved about 1" to 2" forward from stock. Add the weight of coolant and then the Fan's mounted on the front.....etc...etc. I have taken my project to the extreme when it comes to all the mods I have had to dream up as well as sharing ideas with the other guys. I am about 90% done with my firewall. Just one more piece to go....and then I need to fit the engine and trans. in to make sure I am good on the room. Then I have some bracing to complete....prime...paint....install the interior.....then make the headers.....then the exhaust.....then finish the wiring.....then try to add the A/c.....

Karl and Lee are you both using the A/c system or ditching it......I still on the fence at the moment. Karl give me a call....I maybe up in Northen Va Sat. To pickup a Cbr600RR for a friend in Winchester....maybe we can meet up some where on 95.....!!!!!!!

Thanks Lee for the compliment !!!!! Anytime!!!! I will be asking you some ?'s soon!!!!

Default No A/C for me

I'm not doing A/C, I'm using the firewall holes and under-dash space inside the car to route wiring and possibly mount PCM. I also didn't want to mess with the potential clearance issues between the K-member mods and low passenger side compressor location. My car is already and has always been more track car than street car anyway.

Thanks Lee:

Did you get my e-mail? I do have the Pcm mounted where the stock Pcm was. I just raised the covers bottom 1" to get me the clearance I needed.
If you can check your e-mail. I had some ?'s for you. Also on a good note....the fire wall is welded in place. Just got to finish grinding down the welds and ad some bracing. Tonight, I will get the temp plates I need made and cut the metal I need at work. I am hoping to have all of the body welding up down, primed, and painted may be by next weelend!!!!! Then I will begin to start on the header construction!!!!!

Thanks Again Lee!!!!
