Finding a Salvaged LS1/4L60 Combo?

Finding a Salvaged LS1/4L60 Combo .... Well I tried looking thru posts as I am sure this has certainly been covered here many times but I couldnt find anything (maybe some reference links)
I am looking for pointers/tips on finding the best deal for my donor LS1/Trans combo,I ve looked on ebay,dont really want to have the shipping issue seems everything I find seems to be back east or some where that shipping would be involved.
Someone was telling me to find a car (locally)thats been wrecked,pull the motor/trans and then send the carcass to the bone yard or sell other parts and then boneyard the rest (I have a storage issue too,apartment mgr's are not very big on this one)
So please give me some ideas as to what is the cheapest and best way to go about this knowing my situation, I am trying to put this in a 72 NOVA nothing radical,more stock looking utilizing the stock gauges and radiator a good reference would be the guy on here somewhere posted photos of a 70 ish Chevelle convert looks real good ( can not remember who it was)
Yep I cant lie I am trying to do this relatively cheap,and trying to find a smokin deal on a motor/trans and all the stuff harness computer etc.
So fire away, what works Best (no Foose budget here) salvage yards want 3K and up for something with 60,000 miles or so?is that the going rate??someone else says get a later model set up like after 2000? someone else told me to get one out of a truck cheaper but then you need new pan etc??
Please school me on prices,what motor works best,where to find em locally etc any advice or links greatly appreciated.

Well today in our local paper was a 99 Z28 wrecked in front for $4600, figure buy the car take the engine and trans out, use it for whatever you have in mind, then part out the rest of the car, you may have to make some effort shipping stuff out, but it's entirely possible to get the motor trans for little to nothing after stripping and selling the remaining parts. (Pomona swap meet near you? )
An added bonus if you do have the whole car there, there won't be any "oh **** I didn't get xyz part" (and the mad scramble to obtain said part)
Patience is the key, it may be several months before you find the "smoking deal" keep looking and don't get too discouraged, talk to friends, relatives, co workers they may know the proverbial friend of a friend
The truck engine, while this seems a good idea, is it really? you need a different oil pan, possibly a different (LS1 style) intake, then if you trade intakes you need to modify the waterpump outlet to clear the LS1 intake, and blah blah blah, probably just want to stick with the LS1

i've got a local guy here that is selling a 98 w/ a 4l60e ls1 for $1800 with all the accessories, or he'll sell the car outright for $2600. shipping the car to cali would be about $600, and i'm sure you could part out the rest and make most your money back...

Keep looking on ebay. Wait for one to come up within ~250 miles of home so you can just go pick it up and not worry about shipping costs. Also try rewording your search, i.e. motor instead of engine. I picked up a 2004 5.3l with a 4L60E and all the accessories with only 17,000 miles on them for $1500 plus $100 in gas to go get it.
Be patient and one will show up. I looked for over a month before the right one came up.
