Closed loop is the one that requires a MAF. Closed loop refers to a feedback/adjustment cycle between the MAF monitoring incoming air and the oxygen sensors monitoring air/fuel ratio in the exhaust and the computer adjusting fuel accordingly.
Without a maf your in open loop and the computer refers to tables to adjust fueling, its commonly referred to as speed density mode. You would need some tuning software to adjust the tables that the computer refers to to match your setup then you can go mafless.

MAF and open closed loop have nothing to do with eachother.
Open loop, meaning the computer is only relying on inputs for airflow, through maf and SD calculations to determine the airflow, and providing the correct fueling, without feedback from to o2's to determine if the fueling is correct.
Closed loop, the computer uses the o2 sensors to provide feedback to alter fueling to reach the stoich point of the fuel, with gasoline, 14.6x is the typical airfuel ratio you achieve.
MAF, meaning the computer uses both the maf and the VE tables/map sensor to do the dynamic airflow calculations
SD, the comptuer is only using the VE tables, and map sensor to calculate airflow, to then caluclate fueling.
You can run in any of the following situations:
MAF, Open loop
MAF, Closed Loop
SD, Open loop
SD, Closed Loop.
