Default Plastic tank in a 1st Gen???

Ok Guys don't laugh.
I am new to the LS1 world and I am a Autoshop teacher in NC, so I have to put on the impression that I know what the heck I'm doing in front of my students, which is hard sometimes. Our class project is a 1st gen LS1 6 speed swap. What I want to know is if their is any plastic tanks that will swap into the 1st gen fairly easy. We have a 2k Z28 that is our donor car but I think it will require too much fab work to make it work. Also I saw the stuff on TANKS INC about using a stock tank and making it work with a in tank pump.
Any thoughts or input would be great.
Thanks.

Take a look at Chris Macdonalds '69 LS1 car:

http://www.lateral-g.net/members/mcdonald69camaro/

I know he is running a plastic tank, I beleive out of a '96 caprice. I'd e-mail or PM him he knows what it takes to fit. He posts on www.Lateral-g.net alot so you can find his contact info there.

Sounds like a cool project, wish my teacher in High-school would have taught us that!

I have looked into the caprice plastic tanks. The guy who seems to have all the knowledge on this task is on vacation. What I wanted to know about it was if the tank would fit between the frame rails without cutting the rails. I see that the trunk floor has to be cut , but is that it?
Any help would be great.

Thanks

juveteach i have my tank in, it fits between the frame rails and leaf springs. have about an inch on each side of the springs. chris used the hump in the trunk of the caprice. cut it out, cut the floor of the camaro. welded nuts on the bottom of the camaro trunk floor. to make it so you can unbolt it if you have to change the fuel pump without drop`in the tank. i welded angel steel around the hole i cut and fabed up a lid like a cake pan mike

Well, it required some fabbing, and some extraneous steel removal(not much, and nothing structural) but I put a 99 plastic F body tank in my 83 el camino.
It makes dropping in the fuel pump assy very easy, plus it has the carbon canister in the rear on top of the tank for a cleaner engine bay.

Had to fab my own tank straps too, but I think the result is worth the hassle.

Well does anyone know if a F body tank will fit in a 1st gen? We have a 2k donor car and it is complete. Has this tank been tried and used? I haven't even looked at the tank to be honest and was looking to purchase a caprice tank.
i guess I will have to do some research.
Thanks
Mike

Seems like it was more trouble to make it fit than it was worth, if I remember right.

There is a company called Rock Valley i believe that makes stainless steel tanks with drop in fuel pumps that will bolt into the stock location on a 1st gen. Google it and see what you can find.

The Rock Valley tank wasn't cheap. I think it was in the $600-750 price range maybe. Could have been higher. It's been a while since I checked on it.

Hey JUV..It was a pleasure speaking with you.

Hope I was able to help a bit.

This mod can be done as evidenced by my car up and running now just shy of 4K miles and having made a solo trip from Florida to Ohio in the middle of July.

It is by no means a direct swap, but it works and saves MAJOR $$$. The killer thing about it is the expanded capacity. I can go just under 400 miles stretching it out on fumes with the Caprice tank.

I don't know of many other first gens or even 4th gens that can stretch that far inbetween fill ups.

One day when I can get settled in to my new house (Just moved and changed jobs last month), I will do a full write up on many of the DIY mods on my 69 Camaro.

Thanks!

Chris
