Default What transaxles will bolt up to an LS1?

Will the old Toranado/ElDorado transaxle bolt up to an LS1? How about the transverse V8 Cadillacs from the 80's and 90's? I am thinking about building a tube frame mid engine road car with an LS1 and an Automatic transmission.

there's a copany that build's adaptor kit's to a porsche g50 but I can't rember off hand who it was. if you had the money they would be a good option as they handle a lot of power. g50 go for 5k or more though.

call roger at powerhouse 2 www.phii.net He has built many g50 boxes for the ultima crowd. I am running one of his custom built g50/50 boxes in my car. He also sells the ls1 to porsche adapeter plates.

These G50 transaxles, are they shaped like your normal fwd transaxle? (IE motor is sitting sideways in the car and the tranny on the side of it?)

So the Northstar pattern is different? What about the Toranado pattern? Is that BOP? If so, it is pretty easy to bolt a Chevy 90 degree engine to a BOP transmission because 4 out of 6 bolt up, right? Or is the LS1 not a standard Chevy 90 degree pattern? Or am I just plain stupid?

No the g50 boxes sit behind the motor. Here is a picture.

I think 914turboford is asking about transverse type transaxles, not logitudinal types........that right, Brian?

The bellhousing bolt pattern on the LS1 is the same as a SBC except for the two extra on the bottom of the LS1. Here is a adapter for a SBC and a LS1 to 901/915 Porsche transaxle.

I would prefer longitudinal but I think that would limit me to a 3 speed from a Toranado/Eldorado as far as something stock goes. Transverse is my second choice as far as layout but I would like an overdrive and locking torque convertor.

I would look closely at the Toronado units. I think I remember them having a chain (like a transfer case) in them. Not sure if that's right or not, but would certainly be something to look at. I expect you want an all gear type transaxle, and that chain might be a liability (new it'd probably be ok, but how many new Toronado's are there these days?)

Don't the later GM transaxles, I think they are called 4T60's or something also have a primary chain?

I like the Porsche setup but I think he needs info on the TH-425. These are basically a turbo 400 cut in half with a link belt chain connecting the two halves. The chain is not a weak link and GM made this a priority with this transmission. They hold up to 455 olds power and 500 Cadillac power in the eldorado (550 FT/lbs). They are BOP transmissions but you can use an adapter for a chevy pattern to mate the LS1 to the TH-425. If your a fabricator you can use the whole trans/axles and hubs/brake assemblies with a custom A arms to make a great rear suspension.
