Default NEED IDEA FOR PICKUP TUBE! help!

I notched my oil pan, and had it welded for me by the local helicopter guy. He baked it in an oven, and did an EXCELLENT job welding it. What i need to know is what i should do for a pickup tube. I've got the screen over the bare pipe, clamped in place, but i'm worried that this is a very bad idea. I dont know what kind of metal the tube is made of, or how to extend and fab up a new pickup. Here's how it looks now, basically.

It's about an inch above the bottom of the sump. I want to do something like this...

any help would be good.

thanks, i'll drop the pan and see if a magnet sticks to it. Are you using any kind of baffle?

Is the pan warped? Make sure it is'nt. This will put uneeded stress on the block and possibly strip out the fine thread 10 mm bolts. It could leak also. I had to put mine on a jig with a reverse curve before I did my welding so it did not distort.

For my pickup tube, I heated it up with a torch and straightened out the kinks and curves for added length. You must have the pickup with the screen on it. Otherwise you will restrict the flow of oil and hurt your motor if you just have the tube itself with a screen on the end. You will blow it up. Not enough oil can flow through a screen with an area as small as the tube itself. That is why they come with a large pickup and screen. More area for the oil to flow through the screen.

As far as the baffle goes, you will have to cut it as much as you cut the pan.

Hope this helps.

I'll take the screened pickup off my 327 and try to fuse them together. I already notched the baffle, so i'll see what i can do.. Thanks for all the input. No, the pan isnt warped. The guy that welded it is an expert when it comes to this kind of thing. He actually baked it in an oven to heat it up before he welded it, i guess, and we put it down on a perfect flat (within a hundred-thousandth of an inch) flat stone, and it was still good.

I'm about to check summit, etc etc. Thanks for all the input. No, the pan isnt warped. The guy that welded it is an expert when it comes to this kind of thing. Hey Olly....

Am I correct in assuming that you're calling the windage tray (chunk of metal that bolts to the main studs) a baffle?

If so, your best bets are either a good GM dealer (if you can find somebody who will sell it to you at a good price (Personally I like Team Chevrolet in Nebraska for internet orders)) or a good junkyard / salvage yard / whatever the PC term for those are these days. There is a FAQ that has GM part numbers in it (check the top of the Conversions & Hybrids page), if that helps any.

If not, then you're probably still looking at the same two sources, just I'm not sure if that individual part is sold. You might have to pick up a new (or used) pan to steal it from. Or you could just make up a new one.

actually, I have both. I was referring to "a new one" meaning the pickup tube. I think i'll just pick up one from summit that looks like it'll sit nicely, then fuse the two together. They're about 30 bucks. I just need a pickup tube solution. I notched the baffle so it only uses 4 bolts now instead of 6, but is still functional. Sorry bout the confusion
