Default Transmission Talk - T5

Hello eveyone,

I am considering a LS1 conversion into a 1982 Chevy Corvette. I currently have a 700R4 Transmission and want to convert over to a Manual. I was considering the T5 transmission, but I want to make sure that i will bolt up to the LS1 before I jump into it. If its not possible to make that one work what Manual Transmissions mount up to the LS1?

why not a T56? Tremec TKO's is a 5 speed if thats what you're looking for, im sure that bolts up as well.

The T5 is a weak POS. The mustang guys are breaking them with near stock cars (although there are people running 10s with them)

um the TKO is stronger than the T56.
there's the T5,
the t56,
and the TKO (rated at either 500 or 600 ft-lbs i believe)
correct me if i'm wrong

Why not the TKO or the T56,...

First I really don't need a double overdrive.... I will be using 3.55 gears and I don't usually cruise at over 110MPH so it wouldn't be all that much use to me. LOL. And the TKO is pretty expensive.

I know its not a good idea to put a weak transmission behind a high horsepower engine, but at the same time, I really don't want to spend $2000 on a transmission, I rather dump that money into a LS1 (most likely), or if not at least a rebuilt 350.

well there's a plethora <sp? of adapters so you can bolt up basically anything you want if you can handle the work and research involved. I'm sure you could bolt up a muncie M22 if you wanted to... but i think you want an overdrive, correct? Just not a double OD.. BTW a TKO is cheaper and stronger than a Richmond 5 spd.. It is pricey, though.. Double overdrive isnt just used for 110 mph cruising, (unless you've got taller than 2.73's) , it actually would get excellent mileage with 3.55's around 70-75. Calculate the final drive using your tires... Easy to pick up a t56 on ebay, rebuilt for around 1200-1500...
just some thoughts.

I really could swing that, $1200 is close to what I'm looking to pay... I'm just very Leery of buying a transmission off of ebay that is supposed to be "rebuilt." you really don't know what your getting.

Looking for an overdrive for the highway with a nice power range from 1-4 gears.

I think with how many T-56 built that over a 1000 is still too much to pay for that tranny, from what I've read they break easily, so when you buy one used you don't know what your getting, so right now the T-56 is out for me, I'm using 3:55 also, but I haven't decided on a tires size, but I'd like to blast to at least 130mph every now and then, so unless the market comes down or I find a TKO I'll use my T-5 for now,

If you are looking to save money, then spending a little extra in the beginning is a VERY smart move. The T-5 was never meant to handle the power of even a stock LS1 so you will be throwing $$ away on repairs and rebuilds if you go that route......or, spend a little extra now and have a tranny that will be just fine for most applications.
