I know what wire it is and where it goes, wondering if this is has something to do w/ a low voltage battery of the fact the car hasnt been started yet. I was just scanning codes and killing VATS etc.

Where'd the alternator come from? Did you have it tested? Note that Autocrap's, and other part stores, can test these on their benches, but it won't do much for the P1637. I got that code on my '02 Yukon, and swapped in a brand new Delco alt, and the problem disappeared. GM ASE tech said something about internal diode failure. One month later, still without problems.
Worth a stab in the dark.

I got same error code after swapping on a rebuilt alt, tried cleaning the connector pins with no success. The alt worked fine at idle and cruising, but at sustained high revs it would stop charging and I'd be running on the batt.
Swapping on a Bosch rebuilt alt cured the error code and charging issue.

Not for too long. I, like a previous post, had the problem of it refusing to charge @ high RPMs. I went with the code for a couple of months, and it just quit on me last month. Being that my wife drove the vehicle less than 5 miles to/from work, it would go w/o issue. When I'd take it on my 50 mi commute (@ 75mph+), no charge.
I'll bet if you swapped that alt with a "new" alt, your problem will go "bye-bye". Is this a Delco alt or "other guy" alt?

a friend of mine got that while i was doing my swap.. we swapped alternators and his problem disappeared... when i got mine running i never got the code, but we swapped alternators back and he got it again.... he bought a new alternator and it didnt come back...
i didnt notice any charging problems while i had his alt, but my engine only hits high RPM for a couple seconds before i let off...mines setup for drag racing, not road racing..
