Default LS1 in a '98 Jeep Cherokee???

I have a '98 Jeep Cherokee as my daily driver and wanted to know if anyone has ever put an LS1 in one of these? In not, why? I think it would make an excellent daily driver and an awesome off-road machine!!

I know it has been done in Jeep Wranglers and such. Not much of a problem really, other than no one to my knowledge has been able to make the stock Jeep tach work.

have you tried other sites. Maybe one of the jeeper sites would be more helpful.

I searched a few, but only came up with a few LS1's in Wranglers...

They are out there, I guess there just not on the internet. I saw one two weeks ago at an exhaust shop getting some custom headers fitted. It was a two door.

well dude, the wrangler and cherokee and grand cherokee all use the inline 6 engine mostly, so the bays on the wranglers may be the same as the cherokees and grand cherokees. honestly it would work fine, but you might consider just going with a newer jeep motor, some are interchangable. do you have a cherokee or grand cherokee, the grand came in 5.2 and 5.9 , how much would it cost to get the 5.9 bumpin? maybe cheap, but its easy, its a big fat bay, i seen one or two before, i have 3 jeeps.

I have a 98 GC with a 5.9 and was thinking of doing the same swap. The LS motors cost much less to build and they can make a ton of power. Let me know if you start your project.

If I were you I would stick with the Jeep V8 that motor has more potential as a off road motor. Large cubes equals large amounts of torque. Cheaper parts for LS1 may be the case but how much will it cost to actually get the LS1 in the Jeep? I hard clifford performance make awsome bolts ons ect for jeeps

Still think the LS1 motor is much better and has a huge amount of potential where the 5.9 is somewhat limited

Well, when I build my stroker I'll have a spare LS1. Then I could just buy a 4l60e 4x4 tranny for around $800 and put it in myself. All I would need is a computer and a harness. Plus, my LS1 only has 33,500 miles and has full bolt ons and an MS3. It would make plenty of power and be great for daily driving and off-roading. I just wondered if anyone has done it. But it seems like people have and shouldn't be too hard. As soon as I build my stroker, I'm doin' it!!

Oh, BTW, I have a '98 Cherokee.

Getting the motor and tranny to mate up to the transfer case is going to be the problem. There have been many 5.9 owners wanting to swap in an LS1 but getting the AWD to work is the dilemma. But if all you want is a 2wd Jeep that'll stay on the street (kind of boring to me I would think...since that is what my t/a is for) then it'd be quite easy.

I thought the Cherokees were 4x4, not AWD; though I'll admit I don't know much about jeeps.

I think an LS1 Comanche would be sweet.

yeah definitely go over to speed freaks. I dont think anyone over there has put an ls1 into a Jeep. But there will be a few stroked 5.9's..to 408s of course. And definitely check out krcperformance. They do some nasty work.

every jeep i owned had optional full and part time 4wd, i dont know that they made a full time awd, but it wouldnt surprise me. i would think getting a 5.2 for lower power would be easier, but putting a 5.9 would require some modding, and probably the same amount an ls1 would, just my unedumacated guess though. i just stick with the 6 and thrash it, they last forever and cost nothing to replace, id like to build a turbo system for it, push it was far as i can on pump, and just replace the motors when they blow up, they are so cheap, why not, 200$ pffff
