need oil pan ideas.
1.) Use and / or modify one of the factory pans. There are a couple of choices (F-body, C5 Vette, C6 Vette, CTS-V, GTO, TrailblazerEXT, Full size Truck, and the new FWD V8 applications). All are slightly different, and each requires its own windage tray / pickup / dipstick & tube (matched set of pieces). Look for information in the FAQ. The problem is these pans aren't all that easy to modify because they're cast aluminum. 2 problems with that are the pans have a small amount of porosity and soak up some oil (making welding difficult) and since they're alum, you've got to put a fair bit of heat in them to weld, which makes them prone to warp (then you've got to figure out how to get it back flat again).
2.) Build your own. Personally, I'm gonna build my own pan out of steel for my swap project. Easier to weld (for me) and cheaper (for materials). I'm gonna cut the flange from a single piece of steel (like 3/8" or 1/2" plate) and fab the rest out of 14 or 16ga. Will be signficantly easier than what would be required to rework a stock pan. Only real trick is oil filter mount. In my case, the truck is already set up with a remote mount, so I just need to provide the appropriate hose / flare / pipe connections to hook up the remote filter.
